I don’t know for sure, but legend has it that the birth of this elite unit of the EZLN began some moons ago.
While the General Command of the EZLN has repeatedly denied its existence and classifies the rumors about it in the “Funny-And-Not-So-Funny Myths” folder (together with the legends of the Sombrerón[i], the Xpakinté[ii] and recipes from the late SupMarcos’ kitchen), the rumors place the emergence of the famous Popcorn Commando Unit in the caracol of Tulan Kaw towards the end of 2019.
According to this legend, SupGaleano was hoarding all the popcorn kernels in the Southeastern Mexican state of Chiapas. Though he insisted his plan was to sabotage the large movie theater chains and force them to reduce the price of the highly-prized commodity (and to ban the absurd varieties of rancid, fried popcorn flavors), later investigations supported the hypothesis offered by the district attorney (a being with an extraordinary resemblance to a beetle), who presented the following motive for the crime at the trial: SupGaleano wanted to stuff himself full of popcorn. The sudden and incomprehensible shortage of hot sauce only increased suspicions.
The district attorney, Don Durito, who dressed like the Almohada Brothers’ Iron Sherrif[iii] (not to be confused with the Almada brothers[iv], they’re different), delivered a brilliant piece of oratory full of cinematographic references, at times alluding to Al Pacino, Tom Cruise, John Travolta and Matthew McConaughey (see these actors’ films related to jurisprudence). The accused, acting as his own legal representation, was no less well-spoken, and additionally included references to the dramatic arts. He was arguing like Shui Ta/Shen Te in front of the gods (see “The Good Person of Szechwan” by Berthold Brecht) when the clock struck pozol time and the entire jury vanished.

San Cristóbal de Las Casas, 10 de septiembre de 2021. Hoy a las 6 a.m. salió la Delegación Aérea Zapatista “La Extemporánea” del Caracol Jacinto Canek, en San Cristóbal de Las Casas, a bordo de cuatro autobuses, rumbo a la Ciudad de México, para de allí volar a Viena, donde comenzará la segunda fase de la Travesía por la Vida en la renombrada Europa Insumisa, Slumil K’ajxemk’op.
No han sido pocas las dificultades que han enfrentado los zapatistas para llegar a este momento. Racismo y una burocracia absurda en las instituciones mexicanas a la hora de obtener pasaportes, innumerables trabas por parte de la Unión Europea para poder entrar en el contexto de las muchas restricciones en medio de una nueva ola de contagios por la pandemia del Covid-19, las preparaciones, los costos, la extraordinaria logística…
“Es una locura este viaje en plena pandemia”, se dijo tantas veces. Y sí, una locura que inspira, que enseña, que quedará grabada en las mentes y corazones de muchos y muchas de nosotras. En un momento en que el mundo se encierra en sí mismo, en que la muerte ronda, en que el miedo paraliza, en que la intolerancia se viste de cordura y el control, de sensatez sanitaria, enfrentan los zapatistas todos los obstáculos y salen, con todas las medidas de seguridad necesarias, a desafiar el miedo, la parálisis y la muerte misma. Travesía por la Vida en el momento más difícil, pero también el más necesario.

La Extemporánea [1] includes a division of milicianas [female members of the Zapatista civilian militia or reserves]. Apart from being one of the “Listen and Share our Word” groups, they will be in charge of security during the flight and will play one or more soccer matches with women’s teams on the European continent.
One hundred ninety-six milicianas signed up to travel. About twenty were less than 18 years old, so they prepared for the later journeys to the continents of Asia, Oceania, Africa, and America, expecting to be of age by then and able to obtain a passport.
The difficulties with getting their papers (they’re all extemporaneous) and the never-ending runaround at the whim of the government “officials” forced many to abandon the effort. Some are single mothers who have to work to provide for their children. The majority work to support their mothers and younger siblings. Training was also a problem, because it turns out it wasn’t a walk in the park, but rather required preparation for “Listen and Share our Word” work. What was most difficult for them was learning to listen.
Thirty-seven remained. Plus two minors: Defensa (15 years old) and Esperanza (12). So in all there are 39 milicianas. They have been quartered at the Seedbed for three months, practicing, learning, rehearsing, and waiting for the chance to travel: a place to arrive to in Europe. All are of Mayan origin and speak Tzeltal, Tzotzil, Cho´ol, Tojolabal and Castilla [Spanish]. A few are over 25; the majority are between 18 and 21. Their soccer skills are a State secret, but their willingness to struggle is obvious.
No adult male could enter their barracks without permission. If some lost dude entered, he was immediately surrounded by a group of milicianas and “encouraged” to leave at once with solid arguments from batons and slingshots.
The first days of their preparation and adaptation were difficult. The days to follow were even harder. Far from their families, partners, and familiar foods of their villages, they had to endure uncertainty, hunger, sickness, a new climate, the confusion of living with others who are different, the surprise of learning new things, and the astonishment of seeing they could do things they didn’t know they could. For example: listening. And pardon me for insisting again and again about listening, but I look outside and hear the whole world trying to talk – or rather, shout – and find no one, or almost no one, with the willingness to listen.
These combatant compañeras have left behind their first 17 years of life, whether they marked that year on their calendar recently or long ago. There is no doubting their identity: they are ZAPATISTAS.

“I didn’t know about anything that you all have described. I thought that it had always been this way, that I could go to school, have a boyfriend without the obligation to get married, that I could get married if I wanted or not get married if I didn’t, that I could dress how I wanted, that I could participate, learn and teach. I thought it had always been like it is now, where we have rights and not just responsibilities. But now I’ve heard what the compañera said about what life was like in the time of the finqueros [plantation owners]. I heard what it took to prepare to struggle. I heard what it took to go to war. I heard how autonomy was built. So I think I have to get ready to defend what we have built so that those times never return. I thought that’s just how it was, that women were born into freedom. But it turns out that, no, they had to fight, they have to keep fighting. So there’s no rest.”

To Whom It May Concern:
In agreement with the Zapatista Good Government Councils, the Indigenous Revolutionary Clandestine Committee-General Command of the EZLN, and the Zapatista indigenous communities, we declare the following:
First- In recent days, we have witnessed the Mexican State’s inhumane treatment of the migrants who try to leave the unspoken and invisible trap in which they find themselves in the city of Tapachula, Chiapas, Mexico.
Second- Similar to previous administrations, in response to public outcry and complaints of these cruelties, the Mexican government promises penalties for the “excesses” committed by agents of the National Institute of Migration (INM in Spanish). This promise is just another lie. They tell their officers that this will be said publicly to avoid the pressure of so-called public opinion, but that officers should continue with their human hunting methods without fear of consequences: no migrant should get past Chiapas.
Third- Even among members of the so-called National Guard there is discontent. They told them that their mission was to fight organized crime and now they have them acting like hunting dogs chasing after dark-skinned people. Those are their instructions: hunt down anyone with dark skin: “Detain any fucking black person you come across” is the order. It’s quite a foreign policy statement.
Fourth- The indoctrination of the National Institute of Migration agents borders on ridiculous. They tell them that they are defending Mexico from an invasion, as an employee of the INM confidently stated. It wouldn’t hurt the National Institute of Migration to take some basic history classes, now that classes are back, to understand that those who invade come from the United States government which imposes this immigration policy that contradicts the entire history of Mexican foreign policy.
Fifth- The maneuvering performed by the INM to contain human rights organizations and the press so that they can’t document their actions reminds us of what the Salinas de Gortari administration did during the first days of 1994 when they closed off entrances to the Lacandón Jungle to prevent anyone from knowing what they were doing. The hunting of migrants reminds us of what the Zedillo administration did in 1995 when it ordered we be pursued with dogs.

Basilea, Suiza. 30 de agosto 2021. Un Campamento por la Vida y una marcha de protesta tuvieron lugar este fin de semana con la participación activa de la delegación marítima del EZLN y alrededor de quinientos activistas anticapitalistas, antipatriarcales, antifascistas, anticoloniales e internacionalistas quienes luchan en Suiza y Europa, siendo hablantes del suizo alemán, el español, el francés y el italiano entre otras lenguas como el kurdo, el turco y el árabe. Mientras el Escuadrón 421 visitaba cooperativas agroecológicas cerca de Ginebra y el lago Leman, cerca de cincuenta personas surgieron y armaron un gran campamento el jueves 26 de agosto en un parque de la ciudad fronteriza de Basilea (Basel, Bâle) en Suiza, a un lado del río Rin que divide Francia y Alemania de la Confederación Helvética, sede de empresas multinacionales como Novartis y Nestlé, así como de innumerables bancos y marcas de lujo. En suizo alemán, inglés y español, un letrero cerca de la tienda de información, entre la cocina y el templete, da la bienvenida en el campamento zapatista:
“Hemos tomado este espacio para llamar la atención sobre diferentes formas de resistencia, de autonomía, de vivir de forma diferente. Tenga en cuenta que queremos crear aquí un espacio libre de discriminación, donde todes se sientan cómodes y segures. ¡Creemos un mundo diferente aquí y ahora!”

“Vinimos a escuchar, vinimos a aprender”, dijeron lxs zapatistas este 13 de agosto en la Plaza de Colón de Madrid. Escuchar y aprender de quienes luchan, resisten y crean alternativas para nuestro mundo en Slumil K’ajxemk’op, la Europa insumisa.
Entre el 11 y el 13 de agosto, previo al encuentro con el “Escuadrón 421” zapatista, colectivxs, organizaciones, movimientos, familias y personas de la Europa insumisa organizaron una jornada de tres días intitulada No claudicaremos. Lavapiés y otros lugares de resistencia se convirtieron nuevamente en puntos neurálgicos para el hospedaje y la convivencia, como centro de medios libres y para la expresión artística y los (re)encuentros.
Centros Sociales Autogestionados como ‘3 peces 3’ , La Tabacalera , la Oficina de Derechos Sociales la Ingobernable, el Centro Social La Villana de Vallekas, el pueblo okupado Navalquejigo y los jardines comunitarios como el de ‘Esto es una Plaza’ fueron los espacios solidarios para ello. Cercano también el Auditorio Pilar Bardem en el pueblo de Rivas-VaciaMadrid en donde tuvo lugar el concierto de Bienvenida de la Gira Zapatista organizado por la Confederación General del Trabajo (CGT) con la participación de las bandas Boikot y Amparanoia.

Apenas 500 años después | Escuadrón Marítimo Zapatista / En voz de Lupita (5/7)
Escuchamos las palabras del movimiento zapatista, el 13 de agosto pasado en Madrid, luego de una marcha histórica en las calles de la capital española, dos semanas después del Encuentro de mujeres, personas trans, inter y no binarias de la otra Europa, en la Zona a Defender de Notre-Dame-des-Landes. La compañera Lupita habla la lengua tsotsil y el español con fluidez. Es base de apoyo del EZLN y ha sido coordinadora regional de jóvenes y administradora local de trabajo colectivo en el Caracol de Oventik. Se preparó durante seis meses para ser delegada de la Travesía por la Vida y fue voluntaria para viajar en barco a Europa con el Escuadrón 421. Navegó a bordo del velero La Montaña que partió el 2 de mayo de Isla Mujeres en la península yucateca y desembarcó en Vigo, Galicia, el 22 de junio, donde se desempeñó como Tercia Compa. Lupita camina escuchando, desde Madrid en la geografía que se llama España y desde la Zona a defender en la geografía que se llama Francia, en estos suelos y bajos estos cielos renombrados como Slumil K’ajxemk’op, o tierra insumisa.

Voces de la delegación marítima del EZLN en Plaza Colón, Madrid, capital del estado español, después de una marcha histórica el 13 de agosto del 2021, a 500 años de la llamada caída de Tenochtitlán (ahora Ciudad de México) en manos de los invasores de Hernán Cortés.

Madrid, Agosto, 2021. En la Puerta del Sol, la histórica plaza en el hoy centro de Madrid, danzantes reproducen rituales mexicas y danzan al ritmo de los tambores.
En la misma plaza, una carroza-navío inicia su recorrido rumbo a la Plaza de Colón. A bordo, siete indígenas mayas provenientes del sureste mexicano, miembrxs del denominado Escuadrón 421, la avanzada marítima de la Travesía por la Vida zapatista. Con ellas y ellos, algo más de un millar de personas en alegre procesión.
Es el 13 de agosto de 2021, y este día se cumplen 500 años de la caída de Tenochtitlán, la capital del imperio azteca, a manos de los conquistadores españoles liderados por Hernán Cortés. Las fechas, más allá de los hechos que en ellas sucedieron, son símbolos. Y los símbolos, tanto como los espacios físicos, son territorios disputados por las luchas de poder.
En marzo de 2019 el presidente de México le envió una carta al rey Felipe VI y al Papa Francisco exigiéndoles que pidieran perdón por la conquista, presumiblemente con el objeto de que el año del 500 aniversario de la caída de Tenochtitlán fuera el año de la “reconciliación histórica” a pesar de que México no existía en ese entonces y a pesar de que el México de hoy, que sí existe, continúa pisoteando, despojando y despreciando a los pueblos originarios.
Mientras tanto, para la derecha en España la caída de Tenochtitlán significa la heroica y generosa liberación de “millones de personas del régimen sanguinario y de terror de los aztecas”. Ambos polos simplifican y tergiversan una historia mucho más compleja y la utilizan para sus propios fines políticos, evocando un nacionalismo ramplón que divide al mundo en “buenos” (nosotros) y “malos” (ellos), aunque ni el nosotros ni el ellos hayan existido en la época ni quede muy claro a qué se refieren dichos términos en el presente.
En ese escenario irrumpe un pequeño grupo de rebeldes indígenas mayas, que hicieron el recorrido marítimo de la conquista en sentido inverso, que llegaron a las costas de Galicia el pasado 22 de junio, que tuvieron la osadía simbólica de renombrar el antiguo continente, que anuncian una “invasión” para escuchar y aprender, y que ahora “navegan” en una manifestación cuyo lema es: “No nos conquistaron”.
¿No nos conquistaron? ¿Qué significa eso? ¿Otro acto de demagogia? ¿Quién es el “nosotros” que el “nos” implica? El nosotros que el “nos” implica es amplio. Los pueblos indígenas de América, para empezar, que resistieron y resisten y seguirán resistiendo. Pero no sólo ellos. El “no nos conquistaron” significa, también, el desafío a la historia única, al sistema único, a la homogeneidad colonial y postcolonial, a los valores hegemónicos que constituyen los pilares del capitalismo, a la visión única que pretende regir el mundo único: el Universo.
El “nosotros” no conquistado se encuentra en las grietas, en los intersticios, en los abajos, en los márgenes, en la pluralidad jovial de la multiplicidad y la divergencia, en la vitalidad de la vida que se niega a ser enterrada bajo el asfalto del “progreso”, en la pulsión del encuentro ante la dictadura del individualismo, en la efervescencia de la memoria ante la dictadura del olvido, en el respeto, el cuidado y el amor ante el desprecio, el odio y la indiferencia, en la consagración de la vida ante el imperio irracional de una razón totalizadora, en la mirada y la escucha ante la ceguera y la sordera de la verdad absoluta.
Y es ese, precisamente, el sentido de esta gira: el encuentro de los nosotros no conquistados. Los muchos nosotros que nos insurgimos ante el desatino de un sistema mundo que, según nuestro análisis y nuestro dolor, ha perdido el rumbo. Pero en la soledad de nuestras pequeñas o grandes luchas no atinamos a vislumbrar una salida para el desatino de nuestra humanidad, porque la Hidra es inmensa y luchamos apenas contra una o algunas de sus cabezas. Sabemos que es tan enorme aquello a lo que nos enfrentamos, que nuestros pequeños esfuerzos jamás lo podrán derrotar, y si seguimos caminando es sólo por necios, por tercos, porque no tenemos otra opción, porque no nos rendimos, no nos vendemos y no claudicamos. Porque las generaciones venideras merecen una esperanza y para eso es necesario plantar semillas, aunque a veces nos parezca casi imposible que puedan germinar.
¿Pero qué sucede cuando las soledades se encuentran? ¿Qué sucede cuando las semillas se reúnen, cuidan y reproducen en más y más semilleros?
Desde hace casi un año, muchos nosotros se han encontrado para hacer posible esta gira, y en esos encuentros algo se gesta. Se generan oleadas de alcances imprevisibles. Por toda Europa, colectivos, organizaciones e individuos organizados en torno a una gran multiplicidad de luchas se articulan motivados por la provocación de esta Travesía por la Vida. Que los zapatistas sean el catalizador de esas oleadas se entiende: con el gobierno autónomo, la justicia autónoma, la salud autónoma, le educación autónoma, la producción y economía autónomas, con el pensamiento crítico, con sus encuentros de mujeres, de artes, de ciencias, con su construcción laboriosa de otro mundo posible, son ejemplo y prueba de que es posible crear alternativas al mundo único que se nos impone.
En la Plaza de Colón, frente al Monumento al Descubrimiento de América, lxs miembros del Escuadrón 421 dieron su palabra. Reiteraron que ellxs son sólo “el antecedente de un grupo más grande”, y anunciaron que “por partes” llegarán a Europa 501 delegadxs no sólo zapatistas, sino también miembros del Congreso Nacional Indígena y del Frente de Pueblos en Defensa de la Tierra y el Agua. Y dieron a entender que ese sería el último de los grandes actos, y que en adelante los encuentros serían más íntimos. “El mañana no se gesta en la luz. Se cultiva, se cuida y se nace en las sombras inadvertidas de la madrugada, cuando la noche empieza apenas a ceder terreno. Los terremotos que sacuden la historia de la humanidad empiezan con un ‘ya basta’ aislado, casi imperceptible. Una nota discordante a mitad del ruido. Una grieta en el muro.”
Y también dejaron claro a qué vienen y a qué no vienen: “…no venimos a traer recetas, a imponer visiones y estrategias, a prometer futuros luminosos e instantáneos, plazas llenas, soluciones inmediatas. Ni venimos a convocarles a uniones maravillosas. Venimos a escucharles.”
Sabemos que la multiplicidad de los nosotros es riqueza pero también fuente de divisiones y desencuentros, y así lo reflexionaron lxs zapatistas. “Sólo una amenaza más grande, un dolor más terrible, una rabia mayor, es la que puede hacer que nos pongamos de acuerdo en dirigir esa rabia y ese dolor más arriba… de lo que hablamos las comunidades zapatistas es de una causa, de un motivo, de una meta: la vida.”
Cada pequeña lucha es una lucha por la vida. Y sólo en el encuentro de los muchos nosotros se podrá reinventar la vida. Sólo en el encuentro será posible destruir a la Hidra. Sólo en el encuentro habremos de reinventarnos y transformarnos en semillas que, algún día, de alguna forma, en algún lugar, habrán de florecer.
“Porque vivir no es sólo no morir, no es sobrevivir. Vivir como seres humanos es vivir con libertad. Vivir es arte, es ciencia, es alegría, es baile, es lucha.”
