Entrevista realizada el día 5 de agosto del 2014, en horas de la tarde (o sea: después del pozol), en la comunidad de La Realidad Zapatista, en las montañas del sureste mexicano. Condiciones climatológicas: estaba muy fiero el calor, acaso se aguanta el pasamontañas, pero ni modos, qué le vamos a hacer.

Compañera: Buenas tardes, compañero.

M: Buenas tardes, compañera.

Compañera: ¿Cómo se llama?

M: Yo me llamo M.

Compañera: ¿Qué trabajo tienes?

M: Soy autoridad de este pueblo de La Realidad. Pertenezco al comisariado ejidal de esta comunidad, La Realidad.

Compañera: Tengo una pregunta. ¿Cómo va la construcción de la escuela?

M: La construcción de la escuela empezamos el 31 del mes pasado, entonces tiene muy pocos días. No tiene ni ocho días, entonces apenas está iniciando. Apenas ahorita se está empezando con los castillos, a poner los castillos, lo que es la base principal. La construcción va a llevar 25 o 26 castillos, entonces apenas se está logrando poner seis castillos.
Es lo que va ahorita de la construcción, no tiene mucho que empezó. Apenas tiene seis días que empezamos.

Compañera: ¿Qué materiales hacen falta?

M: Ahorita los materiales ya casi todos lo tenemos. Ya fuimos a comprar en la ferretería, ya todo está listo. Ahorita lo que falta es hacer llegar todos los materiales aquí en el pueblo La Realidad.
O sea, ya tenemos todo lo que son varillas, todo lo que compone alambrones, todo eso. Ahorita lo que nos falta es hacer llegar el block, 430 bultos de cemento y 9 líos de lámina (Nota: un lío trae 10 láminas liadas en un solo paquete) y unos clavos para la construcción ya de la casa.
Eso es lo que nos hace falta los materiales a que lleguen aquí en la comunidad. Ora ya la mayor parte los materiales ya está aquí en La Realidad.

Compañera: ¿Y cuándo va a terminar la construcción?

M: Según los albañiles que están, los maestros, según ellos tienen calculado que les va a llevar en terminar 80 días. Es eso lo que tienen calculado ellos, los maestros. Es eso lo que nos han dicho que les va a llevar.

Compañera: ¿Y cómo están organizados en el trabajo?

M: Bueno, aquí en el trabajo nosotros nos organizamos de pasar el turno. Nos vamos a ir turnando, dependiendo la cantidad de ayudante que vaya a pedir los maestros, o sea el albañil. Si dice ‘no, pues este día necesito 10 ayudantes, el día siguiente necesito 8’. Entonces conforme él lo va pidiendo es así como vamos dando la gente, nos vamos turnando. Ya le tocó 8 este día, al otro día otros 8 y así dependiendo de la cantidad que nos diga el maestro. Es así como estamos organizados.
Lo que estamos trabajando aquí es el pueblo de La Realidad que estamos haciendo ahorita el trabajo, y los albañiles pues son compañeros que ellos están dirigiendo el trabajo. Así está organizado.

Compañera: ¿Cómo han pensado que va a quedar la construcción?

M: Bueno, pues para los maestros, los albañiles, nos preguntaron que cómo queremos la casa, cómo queremos el tipo que va a quedar la casa. Entonces nosotros les dijimos así y así queremos, de dos plantas. Entonces hubo alguien, que es una arquitecto y nos dibujó un dibujo conforme nosotros les dijimos así lo queremos.

Entonces para que ustedes vean aquí tenemos unos, ya cómo es que va a quedar, que nos dibujaron las construcciones de la casa, o sea el modelo, el tipo. Es así como va a quedar el tipo. La que está aquí a mi mano derecha, estamos viendo al frente y el que está aquí a mi mano izquierda estamos viendo atrás. Es así el modelo, la forma cómo va a quedar la construcción ya acabada esta construcción, ya es lo que se va a ver. Así es como pensamos dejar esta casa.

Compañera: Y esta casa grande que estamos mirando, ¿qué uso le están dando?

M: Bueno esa casa, desde mucho antes, cuando no había pasado este problema, lo del 2 de mayo, esa casa nosotros desde mucho antes nosotros veníamos pensando, el pueblo se organizó, dijimos que vamos a hacer una tienda colectiva del pueblo, entre los compañeros y las compañeras.

Entonces dijimos:

– Vamos a hacer una casa dividido en dos cuartos. Un cuarto para las compañeras, para que ellas usen, para pura ropa de compañeras, un cuarto de compañeros.

Ya era el plan eso, era una tienda colectiva del pueblo La Realidad, pero como pasa este problema y cuando pasó empezamos a ver nosotros de que…

– ¿Y ahora? Nos chingaron la escuela, nos chingaron la casa de salud. Ahora qué vamos a hacer.

Entonces nosotros empezamos a discutir, como pueblo La Realidad empezamos a discutir qué vamos a hacer. Empezó a salir propuestas de que vamos a ir a arreglar la escuela, de que pues hay que volverlo a parar, componer y otros dijimos:

– No. Ni madres. No lo vamos a construir ya.

Entonces empezamos a pensar, de entre las propuestas empezamos a decir:

– ¿Pero por qué? El que dice que hay que irlo a arreglar, ¿por qué? Y el que dice que ya no, ¿por qué?

Entonces tuvimos que llegar a una solución, a una salida donde dijimos:

– Que se quede, entonces así que se quede.

¿Por qué? El motivo, o sea la razón es de que nosotros dijimos:

– Nosotros no vamos a llorar por eso que nos lo destruyeron y no va a ser un obstáculo para que nos detengamos de nuestra educación. No. Si lo destruyeron eso vamos a seguir construyendo otro. No por una escuela vamos a quedar sin educación.

Ahorita no tenemos escuela, vamos a tener que prestar una casa o vamos a pasar por turnos nuestra casa enseñando nuestros hijos, nuestros niños. Y lo vamos a dejar eso para que vean aquéllos bueyes, esos ciaoaquistas, para que lo vean toda su chingada vida su desmadre, su asesinamiento que hicieron, y después sus hijos esos ciaoaquistas se van a dar cuenta y van a preguntar por qué está así esa escuela.

Entonces qué historia buena le van a contar a sus hijos esos padres, ni modos que le digan ‘pues no sé’. Entonces ese niño se va a dar cuenta qué es lo que hicieron sus padres. El niño va a tener que decidir ‘¿así lo haré o mejor no lo haré así?’. El niño tomará su camino, tomará sus decisiones, si va a hacer igual como el padre, de lo que hizo. Entonces nosotros esa es la razón que dijimos.

– Lo dejemos esa escuela, entonces busquemos otra parte dónde hacer.

Entonces dijimos:

– Para que los niños ahorita no queden sin educación ahí tenemos esa casa destinado de tienda, entonces lo que queremos ahorita, hagamos uso para una escuela.

Entonces el pueblo dijo:

– Está bien. Entonces dejemos, ahora sí ya no lo pensemos de una tienda. Pensemos una escuela, una casa de escuela.

Entonces dijimos:

– Así no va a dar esos cuartitos, dos cuartitos pero bueno –entonces así quedamos, así le destinamos esa casa para una escuela.
Entonces es así, esa casa que se ve es destinado ya de una escuela, que ahorita lo tenemos así mientras, ahorita que los niños no están aprendiendo, no están entrando en la clase ahorita, ahorita lo tenemos destinado para posada de las brigadistas de la construcción de la escuela autónoma, pero ya está destinado para una escuela y es esa casa que se ve.

Compañera: Bueno, muy bien compañero, muchísimas gracias por su plática.

M: Está bien, compañera.

Interview conducted on August 5, 2014, in the afternoon (that is: after pozol), in the Zapatista community of La Realidad, in the mountains of southeastern Mexico. Climatological conditions: the heat was fierce, the skimasks were almost unbearable, but what can you do.

Compañera: Good afternoon compañero.

M. Good afternoon compañera.

Compañera: What’s your name?

M: My name is M.

Compañera: What is your work?

M. I am an authority in this community of La Realidad. I am part of the ejidal commission of this community, La Realidad.

Compañera: I have a question. How is the construction of the school going?

M: We began the construction of the school on the 31st of last month, and so it has only been going on for a few days. It hasn’t even been a week, it’s really just beginning. We are only just now starting with the installation of the iron bars, which are the primary base. The construction will require 25 or 26 bars altogether, and we have just finished installing six of them. This is what is currently happening with the construction; it has only just begun. It’s only been six days since we started.

Compañera: What materials do you still need?

M: We now have almost all of the materials that we need. We have already bought them from the hardware store; everything’s ready. All that we missing are some of the materials that haven’t yet arrived here in the community of La Realidad. That is, we already have all of the metal rods, the wire rods, all of that. Now we are waiting for the cement blocks to arrive – 430 sacks of cement and 9 bundles of laminate (Note: one bundle has ten sheets of laminate bundled into a single packet), and some nails for the construction of the house. That is what we are still waiting for here in the community in terms of materials. Most of the materials that we need are already here in La Realidad.

Compañera: And when will the construction be finished?

M: According to the masons here—the master builders—according to their calculations, it will take them 80 days to finish. That is how long the master builders have calculated; this is how long they have told us that it will take.

Compañera: And how is the work organized?

M: Well, here we organize our work such that we take turns. We take turns depending on how many helpers the master builders, the masons, need. If they say, ‘well this day I need 10 helpers, the next day I need 8,’ then we send the number of they ask for, taking turns. We might send 8 people today and another 8 a different day, and that is how it goes depending on how many people the master builder says that they need. That is how we are organized. It is the community of La Realidad who are doing the work here now; we are working and the masons, who are compañeros, are directing the work. This is how it is organized.

Compañera: How do you think the construction is going to turn out?

M. Well, the master builders, the masons, asked us what we wanted the building to be like, what type of house we wanted built. So we told them how we wanted it to be, with two stories. We had someone who is an architect draw up a design according to what we said that we wanted. We have some of the drawings here for you to see, they show what it will be like, that is, the model or the type of house. And this is the type we chose. This drawing in my right hand is what it will look like from the front and in this one in in my left hand we are looking at it from the back. This is the model, how the house will look when the construction is finished. This is how we thought the building should be.

Compañera: And this big building that we are looking at, what will it be used for?

M: Well this building, as of a long time ago – before this problem of what happened on May 2had come about – for a long time we had been thinking about this building. The community had gotten organized and decided to make a collective store for both compañeros and compañeras. We had said: let’s build a house divided into two rooms. One room will be for the compañeras, for them to use, with all women’s clothes, and one for the compañeros. We had already made this plan, to build a collective store for the community of La Realidad. But then we had this problem and when it happened we said…and now? They destroyed our school; they destroyed our health clinic. Now what were we going to do? And so we as the community of La Realidad began to discuss what we were going to do. There were proposals to repair the school, rebuild it and fix it up, but others said: No, hell no. We are not going to try to build it. And so we began to think together, to look at the proposals and ask – but why? For those who say that we should repair it, why should we? And for those who say no, why not? We had to find a solution, a way forward where we say: this is how it is going to be. Why? The motive, that is, the reason, is because we decided that we are not going to cry for what they destroyed, and we won’t let it be an obstacle to our education. No. If they destroyed this school, we will build another one. Not for lack of a school will we cease our education. Right now we don’t have a school, so we will have to either borrow a house or take turns teaching our children in our houses. And we are going to leave this school as it is, so that for their entire fucking lives, those guys, those ciaoaquistas, can see the chaos, the assassination that they carried out, and later, the children of these ciaoaquistas will see the school and and ask why it is like that. And what a story those parents will have to tell their children, even if they claim ‘well, I don’t know.’ These children will realize what their parents did, and they will have to decide, ‘will I do this kind of thing, or will I do things differently?‘ The children will decide their own paths, make their own choices, decide whether they will do the same things their fathers did. So this is why we said we will leave this school as it is, and search for another place to build. And we decided that so that the children aren’t left without education for now, we will use that spot where we were going to build the store for a school instead. And the community approved the idea. And that is how we left it, now we aren’t planning a store anymore. Now we are planning a school, a schoolhouse. We realized we aren’t going to have those two rooms after all, but that is what we decided, that this building would be a school. So this building is now destined to be a school, and in the meantime, the children aren’t studying, they aren’t going to class right now. For now the house is designated as a place to stay for the brigades that come to help with the construction of the autonomous school, but now that house that you are looking at is destined to be a school
