El movimiento de Resistencia al pago de las altas tarifas de la luz en México, integrado por organizaciones comunitarias y barriales, surgió hace más de 20 años. La paulatina privatización del servicio público de la comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) a manos de empresas trasnacionales, especialmente españolas, y el continuo y arbitrario incremento de las tarifas está desencadenando una mayor coordinación de las luchas a nivel regional y nacional.

En el estado de Chiapas se genera el 45% de la energía hidroeléctrica del país, que se exporta incluso a Centroamérica. Las comunidades chiapanecas en Resistencia, al margen del Estado, cuentan con sus propios técnicos electricistas, compran e instalan los transformadores y postes de luz y mandan un claro mensaje: “No pagaremos la luz hasta que se cumplan los Acuerdos de San Andrés”, firmados entre el gobierno federal y el EZLN en 1996 referentes, entre otros, al control de los recursos naturales.

The movement of resistance to the payment of high electric power rates in Mexico, made up of community and neighborhood organizations, was born over 20 years ago. The increasing privatization of the public service by the Federal Electric Commission (CFE) in the hands of transnational companies, especially Spanish, and the continuous and arbitrary increase in rates, has led to a greater coordination of struggles on a regional and national level.

In the state of Chiapas 45% of the country’s hydroelectric energy is generated, which is exported even to Central America. The communities in resistance of Chiapas, independently from the state, have their own electric tecnicians, purchase and install transformers and light posts and send a clear message: “We will not pay for electricity until the San Andres Accords are met”, which were signed between the federal government and the EZLN in 1996, and which deal, among other things, with the control of natural resources.

En este programa examinamos la “nueva geografía” de la guerra en el contexto de la “vieja geografía” de Chiapas. Hablamos con nuestro corresponsal especial en Chiapas, Alejandro Reyes, que reporta sobre el estado actual de la represión y la guerra de baja intensidad enfocándose específicamente en las comunidades de Mitzitón, Bachajón, y Tila. Utilizamos estos eventos para contextualizar y enmarcar una conversación sobre el nuevo texto escrito por el Subcomandante Marcos: “Apuntes sobre las guerras.”

On today’s show, we examine the new geography of war in the context of the “old” geography of Chiapas. We talk with a compa of ours on the ground in Chiapas, who reports on some of the most recent clashes of the low-intensity war in Mitzitón, Bachajón, and Tila. We use these events, and the bigger picture in which they take place, to help us frame the conversation about the new letter from Subcomandante Marcos: “Notes on War.”
