Members of the Global Sumud Flotilla abducted by the Israeli military in international waters on Wednesday night are expected to be transferred to one of Israel’s most notorious torture prisons. The Ketziot prison, located in the Negev Desert, has been the site of repeated abuses against Palestinian prisoners.

In 2021, footage emerged of dozens of Palestinians shackled and thrown to the ground, while Israeli guards kicked and punched them in turn. No officers were ever charged.

In 2023, a 38-year old Palestinian prisoner was beaten to death by a group of guards who wore helmets to disguise their faces. Thaer Abu Asab reportedly received a blow so hard that “a piece of his skull fell to the ground and blood filled the floor of the room,” according to his brother. Nineteen officers were investigated. None were prosecuted. Five we simply transferred to another unit.

And just last year, Israeli Human Rights Group B’Tselem released a report containing the testimonies of 12 Palestinians taken to Ketziot since October 7th. They described beatings with batons, torture, humiliation and sexual violence, as well as lack of sanitation and food, a failure of the guards to meet their basic needs.

Israel’s Flotilla prisoners are expected to be incarcerated in the prison for several days as a result of the Yom Kippur holiday, meaning that Israel will not begin deportations until Monday or Tuesday. Clare Azzougrah, whose 72-year-old RAF-veteran father Malcom Ducker has been detained, was told that all were being moved to the prison because “there are so many of them and they need to keep them together.” She added, “But I don’t believe them for a second.”

Novara Media has particular concerns for the safety of its journalist, @Kieran_Andrieu, a British journalist of Palestinian descent whose six siblings live in the Occupied Territories. Andrieu had intended, for his own safety, to sign a voluntary deportation order, allowing him to leave the country immediately. Now, given his heritage, Novara Media fears his health and life may be in grave danger if moved to the prison.

The British Foreign Office has said it is “very concerned”.

MEDITERRANEAN SEA – After Israeli occupation naval forces illegally intercepted vessels of the Global Sumud Flotilla —a peaceful, non-violent convoy carrying food, baby formula, medicine, and volunteers from 47 countries to Gaza—hundreds of participants have been abducted and reportedly taken aboard the large naval vessel, the MSC Johannesburg. This was after they were assaulted with water cannons, doused with skunk water, and had their communications systematically jammed in yet more acts of aggression against unarmed civilians.

Additionally, several boats were reportedly stopped by a chain-like barrier in international waters where Israel has no jurisdiction, just as they have no jurisdiction over Gaza’s waters and shoreline, compounding Israel’s continued war crimes and illegal blockade.

Adalah lawyers, who represent the flotilla participants before Israeli authorities, have been given minimal updates and have not been informed on whether the estimated 443 flotilla volunteers, who were forcibly taken from their vessels, will arrive at Ashdod, where they are expected to be processed under illegal detention.

This is an unlawful abduction, in direct violation of international law and basic human rights. Intercepting humanitarian vessels in international waters is a war crime; denying legal counsel and concealing the fate of those seized compounds that crime. We demand that governments, world leaders, and international institutions immediately intervene to secure information on the missing participants, guarantee
their safety, and demand their immediate release.

Our commitment remains clear: to break Israel’s illegal siege and end the ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people. Every act of repression against our flotilla, every escalation of violence in Gaza, and every attempt to suppress solidarity actions only strengthen our resolve.

Mikeno, sailing under the French flag, may have entered Palestinian territorial waters according to AIS data, but remains out of contact. Marinette, sailing under the Polish flag, is still connected via Starlink and in communication, carrying a total of 6 passengers on board.

Hace algunas horas, la Global Sumud Flotilla rebasó la línea de las 150 millas náuticas de distancia de Gaza, punto en el que las autoridades y los medios israelitas afirmaron que no le permitirían pasar. Un navío militar israelita realizó maniobras intimidatorias, circulando alrededor de los barcos Alma y Sirius, y lanzó un ataque cibernético que dañó el equipo de comunicación y navegación, que hasta ahora continúa presentando problemas. Según los testimonios, se veían luces iluminando uno de los barcos desde abajo, lo que quizás indique la presencia de un submarino militar. Después de un tiempo en alerta máxima, el navío agresor se alejó.

A pesar de las agresiones, intimidaciones y amenazas, la Flotilla continúa. Son 41 barcos con miembros de más de 40 países, determinados a romper de forma pacífica el cerco israelita y llevar ayuda humanitaria que el pueblo palestino necesita desesperadamente. Con la legislación internacional y el apoyo de la mayoría de la población mundial, la Flotilla es el intento más audaz por romper el cerco hasta ahora.

En este momento, la Flotilla ya rebasó las 120 millas náuticas, y el peligro de una intercepción o un ataque israelita es inminente.

Invitamos a quienes nos leen a estar atentxs a la Flotilla en las próximas horas, que serán las más cruciales. Sólo los ojos del mundo serán capaces de garantizar que la Flotilla llegue a su destino y la integridad de sus tripulantes.

DECLARACIÓN SOBRE LA FRAGATA NAVAL ITALIANA QUE INTENTA SOCAVAR LA GLOBAL SUMUD FLOTILLA

El Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores de Italia nos ha informado que la fragata naval que sigue a nuestra flotilla pronto emitirá un llamado por radio, ofreciendo a los participantes la “oportunidad” de abandonar el barco y regresar a tierra antes de llegar a la llamada “zona crítica”. Queremos ser absolutamente claros: esto no es protección. Es sabotaje. Es un intento de desmoralizar y fracturar una misión humanitaria pacífica que los gobiernos no han asumido, a pesar de que fue su silencio y complicidad lo que nos llevó hasta este punto.

Esto es cobardía disfrazada de diplomacia. Si Italia realmente quisiera proteger vidas, no actuaría como facilitador de Israel, ni presionaría a civiles para que se retiren. Utilizaría su flota naval para garantizar el paso seguro de voluntarios pacíficos hacia Gaza, para hacer cumplir el derecho internacional y para entregar suministros que salvan vidas. Cualquier cosa menos que eso es complicidad.

Cada participante a bordo está plenamente consciente de los riesgos. No estamos aquí bajo ninguna ilusión. Estamos aquí porque es mucho más peligroso permanecer en silencio ante el genocidio, el hambre y el castigo colectivo que navegar llevando ayuda humanitaria. El gobierno italiano lo sabe, y aun así, en lugar de usar su considerable poder naval para romper un asedio ilegal, elige escoltarnos solo hasta el punto de peligro y luego intenta alejarnos, llevándonos de regreso a la costa con las manos vacías, mientras Israel continúa matando de hambre y asesinando al pueblo palestino con total impunidad.

Repetimos: la flotilla continúa navegando. La marina italiana no detendrá esta misión. La exigencia humanitaria de romper el bloqueo no puede retroceder hacia el puerto, y nuestra responsabilidad moral no puede ser abandonada por la borda. Cada milla náutica que avanzamos, cada amenaza que enfrentamos, solo subraya lo que los gobiernos no han hecho y lo que los ciudadanos comunes ahora se ven obligados a hacer.

El bloqueo de Israel es ilegal. Su asedio es criminal. Y el silencio del mundo es intolerable. Si el gobierno italiano quiere ser recordado por su valentía, debe navegar con nosotros.

El barco donde viajan los organizadores de la Flotilla Global Sumud sufre un ataque perpetrado por un dron, así lo han afirmado los organizadores en un comunicado lanzado este 8 de septiembre. El acto de agresión, que no ha sido reclamado, no tuvo éxito al querer truncar el avance de esta misión civil internacional que busca llevar ayuda humanitaria a la Franja de Gaza y llevar un mensaje de solidaridad al pueblo palestino.

De acuerdo con el comunicado oficial de la organización difundido esta mañana, el barco principal de la flotilla, bautizado como “Barco Familia”, el cual porta la bandera portuguesa, fue atacado presuntamente por un dron mientras se encontraba atracado en aguas tunecinas. El ataque, ocurrido en la noche de este lunes (8), tuvo lugar a escasas horas de la partida de la flotilla desde el puerto de Sidi Bou Said, próximo a Túnez capital. A bordo de esta embarcación se encontraban miembros del Comité Directivo de la misión. Afortunadamente, y en lo que la organización ha calificado de “milagro”, los seis pasajeros y tripulantes a bordo resultaron ilesos.

En un contundente mensaje, los organizadores de la Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) han tildado el incidente de “acto de agresión destinado a intimidar y descarrilar nuestra misión”. Lejos de amedrentarse, la GSF ha reafirmado su compromiso: “Nuestra misión pacífica de romper el asedio a Gaza y ser solidaria con su pueblo continúa con determinación y resolución”.

La palabra “Sumud” –que en árabe significa “firmeza” o “resistencia pacífica”– cobra hoy más sentido que nunca. El ataque no ha hecho más que reafirmar la voluntad de los cerca de 300 voluntarios de 44 nacionalidades diferentes que conforman la flotilla. Entre ellos se encuentran figuras de alto perfil como la activista climática sueca Greta Thunberg y la exprimera edil de Barcelona, Ada Colau, cuya presencia busca atraer la atención global hacia la crisis humanitaria en Gaza.
