Confronted by this grave situation faced by our comrades in the Zapatista support bases in several communities, it was agreed at the last meeting of the Network against Repression and for Solidarity on 25 June to have a Brigade of Observation and Solidarity with the Zapatista Communities, which will take place from August 27 to September 3.

As such, we call on compañero/a adherents to the Other Campaign and to the International Zezta to join this Brigade, considering that this action will require a high degree of discipline and commitment, because the task occurs in a framework of harassment and provocation by the three levels of government, three branches, political parties, media isolation, various police hit squads, military and paramilitaries.

In addition, our presence in Zapatista territory confirms our saying “You are not alone”, providing solidarity to our colleagues in the current situation of violence, at the same time we can document the progress of Zapatista Autonomy.

BRIGADA DE OBSERVACIÓN Y SOLIDARIDAD A COMUNIDADES ZAPATISTAS.

Ante esta grave situación que enfrentan nuestros compañeros de lucha Bases de Apoyo Zapatistas en varias Comunidades se acordó en la última reunión de Red contra la Represión y por la Solidaridad, del 25 de junio pasado, la realización de una Brigada de Observación y Solidaridad a Comunidades Zapatistas que se llevará a cabo del 27 de agosto al 3 de septiembre.

Por lo que convocamos a compañeros y compañeras adherentes a La Otra Campaña y a la Zezta Internacional a integrar esta Brigada, considerando que esta acción va a requerir un alto grado de disciplina y compromiso, pues la tarea a realizar se da en un marco de hostigamiento y provocaciones por partes de los tres niveles de gobierno, tres poderes, partidos políticos, medios de incomunicación, diferentes policías, grupos de choque, militares y paramilitares.

Además, nuestra presencia en territorio zapatista confirma nuestro dicho de “No están solos”, brindando solidaridad a nuestros compañeros y compañeras ante la actual situación de violencia; a la vez, podremos documentar los avances de la Autonomía Zapatista.

Red contra la Represión y por la Solidaridad
Individuos, Grupos, Colectivos y Organizaciones Adherentes a La Otra Campaña

In this report, we joined the students and workers in Santiago de Chile in the massive march on July 14, 2011, to hear the voices of the protesters in their struggle against neoliberalism and for the democratization of public education. We also spoke with an activist in Santiago about the history of the privatization of education to better understand what is happening in the current struggle in Chile.

UPDATE:

Just a few days ago, on Thursday August 4, 2011, the student movement in Chile was brutally attacked by the neoliberal government of Sebastián Piñera. After nearly six weeks of protests, marches, and occupations of schools, the students once again took to the streets in a massive, unauthorized protest. In response to the escalating protests, President Piñera chose to apply a law put in place by former dictator Augusto Pinochet, which makes popular assembly illegal if it is not authorized by the government. Threatening the student activists, the Minister of the Interior, Rodrigo Hinzpeter stated that “the students will be held responsible for any deaths that result from the protests.”

The massive mobilizations throughout the country were met with violent repression by the thousands of police officers deployed to attack the protesters, and by the end of the day there were dozens wounded and 874 people had been arrested. Reports from Santiago announced that the city was under a state of siege, and the smell of tear gas had permeated the barrios. That night, neighbors took to the streets with the practice known as the “cacerolazo,” banging on pots and pans late into the night to show their support for the students and to denounce the violence. This practice became quite common during the nearly two decades of military dictatorship under Pinochet.

The following day, protests were held across Latin America and around the world, as rallies were held in front of Chilean embassies and Consulates in dozens of countries. And in Santiago, outside of the Memory Museum—a space dedicated to the collective memory of the state terrorism of Pinochet’s dictatorship—student installed the “Museum of Repression” with displays of items they had gathered during Thursday’s protests. Images circulated of a display of tear gas canisters, accompanied by a sign that reads: “Each canister costs approximately $250 dollars, and on this block alone we gathered more than 370 discarded canisters. You can draw your own conclusions.”

What follows is a segment produced by Radio Zapatista a few weeks ago, reporting from the July 14 march in Santiago de Chile. While it is now somewhat outdated, we want to air it because it gives a sense of the events that led to Thursday’s historic march and repression, and allows us to hear some of the voices of those who have been, and continue to, organize in defense of public education.

Londres se une a la Marcha del Silencio por la Justicia y contra la Impunidad

Nos reunimos poco a poco frente al número 16 de la calle de St George Street, Mayfair cerca de Oxford Street, que es donde se encuentra la Embajada de México en el Reino Unido.  Mientras que las tiendas en Oxford Street se encuentran repletas por ser fin de semana, las calles que se encuentran alrededor están prácticamente vacías.  Zona de oficinas después de todo, en el corazón de Londres. Lujosa locación para la embajada, pero el contribuyente el que paga la cuenta.

Ante tanto vacío, el grupo de gente con pancartas y colores se volvía cada vez más evidente. Se leían las consignas: No más sangre, Paz con Justicia y Dignidad, Sólo saben Privatizar y Militarizar, Mandar Obedeciendo es la Paz, You get high and Mexicans die, The streets belong to the children, not to the army.

También la embajada estaba vacía por ser domingo. Aunque en muchos sentidos siempre ha estado vacía, aún dentro de la actitud conciliadora y mediatizadora de conflictos. Vacía porque ahí no hay respuesta para el mar de abusos de derechos humanos perpetrados en México (Acteal, Aguas Blancas, El Bosque, Inés y Valentina violadas por militares en Guerrero, Feminicidios de Juárez, la muerte colectiva para la digna familia Reyes Salazar y un largo y verdaderamente lamentable etcétera). No hay respuesta, ni la puede haber con el actual embajador Eduardo Medina Mora, arquitecto del desastre nacional desde su puesto como Procurador General de la República hasta Septiembre de 2009 y Director General del Centro de Investigación y Seguridad Nacional (CISEN) de diciembre de 2000 a septiembre de 2005. Defensor de la estrategia oficial, Medina Mora declaró públicamente en su discurso a la salida de la PGR que “ha habido progreso” y que “la decisión histórica de usar el poder del Estado  para parar a las organizaciones criminales fue fundamental para asegurar el futuro de la nación.” Cuarenta mil muertos lo obligan a uno a pensar lo contrario.

Más allá de la esperanza de que los primeros empleados encuentren las pancartas, los nombres de las víctimas que se dejaron en el buzón y tengan que cortar el listón negro con el que se clausuró simbólicamente la Embajada, nos reunimos allí para encontrarnos. Para encontrarnos en nuestro silencio, pero también para compartir que sí, que efectivamente, también estamos hasta la madre.

Se leyó la carta de Javier Sicilia que convocaba a la marcha nacional, hubo minutos de silencio solemne y también la presentación de la instalación: “Distancia, 68 metros de ausencia” de Mara Bueno. Se trata de 68 metros de tela blanca que fueron desplegados frente a la Embajada y sobre la cual, los manifestantes se tendieron para ser una representación gráfica de las muertes de esta guerra. En las palabras de Mara: “Se trata de la representación física del 1% de los 40,000 asesinatos. 68 kilómetros es el resultado de multiplicar 40,000 por la altura media de un mexicano: 1.70 metros. La intención es hacer algo tangible de este número que es imposible de entender con tan sólo imaginarlo.”

The only crime the people of the San Sebastián Bachajón ejido have committed is that of wanting to live in their lands—the lands of their grandparents, of their most distant ancestors—which now risk being appropriated by the multinationals of money and death. The five from Bachajón, imprisoned since February 3, like Patricio Domínguez Vázquez, who was detained in mid-April in the ejido Monte Redondo of Frontera Comalapa, are victims of the political class that works in the service of multinational corporations.

Today’s war is for the land: To appropriate the life that it provides for and reproduces, and for this reason, the indigenous peoples and campesinos are the primary obstacles that must be done away with. Ever since capital decided that everything is a commodity for doing business and accumulating more capital, no space on earth remains – not even the slightest corner – that can free itself from this ambition. In order to seize the land, they unleashed what the Zapatistas have termed the “Fourth World War.” In Latin American this war lies in the displacement of millions of people from roughly one hundred million hectares in dispute. The huge open-pit mining projects; the monocropping of sugarcane, maize, and soy to produce gasoline; and the planting of trees to create cellulose are all killing life and people from South to North.

In some cases, such as Patricio’s, where not only was he imprisoned, but his house was burned down and destroyed because, in reality, they wanted him to abandon his land. That is the war that has existed for 60 years in Colombia, which allowed more than four million hectares to pass from the hands of the farmers to those of the paramilitaries, since they are offered as a form of security by the multinationals. A war to expel farmers – over three million in the last twenty years – in order to free up territories so that they may be converted into spaces for the speculation of capital. In Colombia, the territories of the war coincide precisely with the territories that the big mines and infrastructure megaprojects desire.

The same thing is taking place throughout the entire continent. The Brazilian government is turning the Amazonian rivers into cheap energy sources for the big businesses from Brazil and the North. It is constructing enormous dams that require ten, fifteen, and even twenty thousand poorly paid and miserably housed workers: They are the new slaves for governments obedient to capital. When they rise up, as they did in Jirau (in the state of Roraima) last March, they become labeled as “bandits.”

What is most painful, and most revealing, is how the political class that once claimed to be of the Left unites with the perennial political class of the Right in the displacement and imprisonment of indigenous peoples and farmers, and in doing so, demonstrates that they are all the same in their attack against those from below to make businesses for those from above. And they use “ecological” arguments because they learned the politically correct excuses to downplay displacement.

From this corner of the continent, I join you who all in New York who are carrying out the campaign to free the Bachajón 5 and Patricio. Movement for Justice in El Barrio, who I was able to meet in January 2009 at the Festival of Dignified Rage in San Cristobal de las Casas, shows that community solidarity and camaraderie know no borders, and that we cannot hope for anything from those from above or their institutions. We only depend on ourselves.

Les queremos compartir el tercer informe sobre la convocatoria “5 Días MÀS de Acción Mundial por los 5 de Bachajón”, los días 24 al 28 de abril, respectivamente.

En el último día de los “5 Días MÁS de Acción por los 5 de  Bachajón” y en anticipación del “Día de Acción Global por la  Liberación del Preso Politíco Zapatista,” el jueves por la tarde, nos fuimos en caravana de nuestro querido Barrio a otra parte de la ciudad de Nueva York que queda muy lejos de nuestra comunidad. Nosotr@s fuimos para hacer eco al digno movimiento con las justas demandas que nuestr@s herman@s del ejido de San Sebastián Bachajón han puesto en marcha desde hace mucho tiempo. Por medio de un foro público especial, en el cual estrenamos las películas “¡Viva  México!” y el “Tercer Mensaje de San Sebastián Bachajón.” Llegamos con el propósito de difundir ampliamente información sobre la lucha digna del pueblo valiente de Bachajón y a la vez compartir la información sobre las actividades y acciones que se están realizando al nivel mundial en solidaridad con ell@s.

L@s integrantes de Movimiento tomaron turno para dar una explicación sobre todo lo que ha pasado a lo largo de los últimos meses en San Sebastián Bachajón, Chiapas. Al público presente, le platicamos de la represión brutal por parte del mal gobierno del perredista represor gobernador Juan Sabines Guerrero y del panista represor presidente Felipe Calderón. Con la película “¡Viva México!” intentamos darles a l@s activistas solidari@s que estuvieron ahí un marco histórico para entender las condiciones en las cuales salen estas luchas de abajo y a la izquierda.

También, en nuestro foro público les pedimos a tod@s l@s presentes que organicen sus propias actividades para que se multiplique la presión que estamos ejerciendo colectivamente contra el mal gobierno mexicano. Claramente exigimos, en nuestra petición, que se liberen de inmediato nuestros cinco hermanos de Bachajón y al preso político zapatista Patricio Domínguez Vázquez. Y con ello, afirmamos de nuevo nuestro compromiso de luchar hasta que se logre su liberación y que se haga justicia. O como los cinco compas nos han dicho en sus cartas, luchar “¡Hasta la victoria siempre!”

Además, repartimos copias de la “Declaración Mundial en Apoyo a los Indígenas Tseltales de San Sebastián Bachajón Adherentes a La Otra Campaña” y la gente la leyó y la firmó. Haciendo ruido que llegó hasta las calles, nosotr@s concluimos el evento con consignas de  “¡Libertad, libertad a los presos por luchar!,  “¡Presos  políticos, libertad!”, y “¡La tierra no se vende, se ama y se defiende!”.

Para nosotr@s toda esta lucha por la comunidad de Bachajón –por la autonomía indígena, por la tierra y el agua, por la dignidad humana– sigue llenandonos de animo para continuar luchando. Con el dolor, la rabia, y la esperanza avanzamos hacia adelante dia tras dia y vamos juntando nuestros esfuerzos, imparables, como las Cascadas de Agua Azul.

Muy cariñosamente queremos agradecerles a tod@s que se sumaron a los “5 Días MÁS de Acción Mundial por los 5 de Bachajón” y al “Día de Acción Global por La Liberación del Preso Politico Zapatista.” Muchos grupos y colectivos y personas de buen corazón alrededor del mundo se aliaron para llevar a cabo a estas dos campañas. Nos llena de orgullo que se hayan realizado tantas acciones realizadas durante estos días. También nos motivan a seguir luchando por la liberación de nuestros 5 compañeros de Bachajón y de nuestro compañero Patricio Domínguez Vázquez, quienes permanecen como rehenes del Estado; como presos políticos injustamente detenidos y en pésimas condiciones de encierro. Queremos que tod@s sepan que nosotr@s tomamos en serio el lema de La Otra Campaña: “Si nos tocan a un@, nos tocan a tod@s.”  Es así que creemos que las luchas de tod@s l@s que hacen La Otra Campaña son nuestras, y que su sufrimiento es nuestro también. No vamos a parar de luchar. Seguimos en pie de lucha, hasta que nuestros hermanos respiren de nuevo aire libre.
