Desde Europa: ¡Solidaridad con los y las zapatistas!

Con mucho coraje y preocupación nos hemos enterado de la grave situación en Chiapas. Hemos escuchado las recientes denuncias que nos hablan de agresiones armadas, intimidaciones y despojo a varias comunidades autónomas zapatistas por parte de grupos paramilitares que actúan con la protección de los tres niveles del gobierno mexicano.

Denunciamos con repudio los serios hostigamientos que sufren nuestros compañeros y nuestras compañeras bases de apoyo zapatistas en la Comunidad Autónoma Comandante Abel, antes conocida como San Patricio, Municipio Autónomo Rebelde Zapatista la Dignidad. Desde hace más de un año el grupo paramilitar “Desarrollo Paz y Justicia” ha encabezado una serie de agresiones en contra de las familias bases de apoyo zapatista de la comunidad de San Patricio. Los pasados 6 y 7 de septiembre, estas agresiones se intensificaron cuando un grupo de alrededor de 150 paramilitares entraron a la comunidad robando el maíz, destruyendo potreros y alambrados y realizando disparos en contra de las familias zapatistas con el objetivo de desplazar a la población y despojar a los pueblos de sus tierras. Como resultado de estas agresiones han sido desplazadas 70 personas.

Estamos informados del intento de despojo de una bodega de café en el municipio autónomo San Pedro de Michoacán que desde el levantamiento en el año 1994 está en manos de los municipios autónomos rebeldes zapatistas. Desde julio del año 2012 un grupo armado impulsado por las autoridades del ejido San Carlos ha amenazado a las y los compañeros, ha cercado la bodega con alambre de púas, ha cortado la energía eléctrica y ha invadido el terreno de un compañero con el fin de quitar la bodega.

Igual denunciamos las agresiones y provocaciones que los bases de apoyo zapatista del ejido Moisés y Gandi, región Che Guevara, Municipio autónomo en rebeldía Lucio Cabañas, han sufrido el pasado mes de agosto por gente armada de la Organización Regional de Cafeticultores de Ocosingo (ORCAO), organización que desde hace varios años disputa la tierra recuperada a las y los zapatistas.

Asímismo delatamos las constantes agresiones, robos y amenazas de expulsión que enfrentan cotidianamente las bases de apoyo zapatistas de la comunidad San Marcos Avilés, municipio de Sitalá. Lamentablemente la estrategia común en estos casos es promover la confrontación entre comunidades y gente pobre para dividir la lucha y unión de abajo. Las tierras recuperadas por los y las zapatistas con el levantamiento armado de 1994, están siendo ofrecidas por el gobierno a grupos particulares, que con impunidad intentan arrebatar el territorio. Desde el poder se siembra la discordia porque sólo así se mantiene el control y puede seguir el saqueo, la extracción neoliberal y la invasión.

Por último nos aliamos a las voces que exigen la libertad de los presos políticos en Chiapas, entre los que queremos destacar el caso de Francisco Sántiz López y Alberto Patishtán. Por todo lo anterior, exigimos al gobierno de México en todos sus niveles: al presidente Felipe Calderón Hinojosa, al gobernador del estado de Chiapas Juan Sabines Guerrero y a los presidentes y las presidentas municipales el cese de todos los hostigamientos y amenazas por parte de los grupos paramilitares a las comunidades zapatistas, así como el cese a la represión de pueblos, grupos e individuos adherentes a la otra campaña.

Exigimos al gobierno mexicano que cumplan con su obligación de respetar, proteger y garantizar los derechos humanos, como lo marcan los instrumentos internacionales firmados y ratificados por México.

A nuestras compañeras y compañeros zapatistas y adherentes a la otra campaña, queremos envíar un fuerte saludo solidario y de resistencia. No están solas! No están solos!

In a recent statement the world-renowned writer, linguist, and political commentator, Noam Chomsky, issues his public support for the campaign “Worldwide Echo in Support of the Zapatistas.” The campaign, which has rapidly spread throughout cities and communities around the globe, seeks to mobilize support and solidarity for the Zapatista support bases of the Comandante Abel, Unión Hidalgo, San Marcos Avilés and Moisés Gandhi communities currently suffering severe aggression at the hands of local, government-backed attack groups – and the Zapatista political prisoner, Francisco Sántiz López, who has remained unjustly imprisoned since December 2011 under false charges. These attacks stem from the current wave of government repression against the Zapatista movement, which encompasses thousands of indigenous communities in resistance throughout the Mexican state of Chiapas.

As Chomsky writes:

“It is very disturbing to learn of the attacks underway, and planned, against the Autonomous Zapatista Community of San Marcos Avilés and in particular against the Zapatista political prisoner Francisco Sántiz López. I would like to join in support of the campaign “Worldwide Echo in Support of the Zapatistas,” and of all of those who are standing up courageously to oppose the repression, and who are calling for justice and freedom for the endangered communities and individuals subjected to persecution and serious threats.”

Nosotros, el Colectivo Cultural “Lo de Menos” adherentes a la Sexta Declaración de la Selva Lacandona y miembros de “La Otra Campaña”:

Considerando:

1.- Que las comunidades indígenas zapatistas han sufrido el acoso de todos los partidos políticos y de los gobiernos municipales, estatales y federales, quienes ante la digna resistencia de las comunidades han integrado, armado y entrenado a grupos paramilitares que han perpetrado masacres contra estos pueblos como la de Acteal y El Bosque, bajo el amparo de las autoridades oficiales.

2.- Que las comunidades indígenas zapatistas de Chiapas al iniciar 1994 dijeron un ¡Ya basta! a cinco siglos de marginación, despojo de sus tierras, analfabetismo, mortalidad por enfermedades curables y desprecio a su dignidad; recuperaron sus tierras ancestrales y se organizaron para poder gobernarse a sí mismos y vivir dignamente en sus comunidades construyendo sus sistemas autónomos de educación, salud, producción colectiva y cooperativa, y sobre todo, de las Juntas de Buen Gobierno.

3.- Que desde hace varias semanas, desde las Juntas de Buen Gobierno de las comunidades zapatistas en Chiapas nos llegan las noticias de que se está agudizando la estrategia de usar grupos paramilitares que los amenazan con disparos de armas de grueso calibre, que les despojan de sus tierras que son la base de su soberanía, matan a sus animales, les queman sus cosechas y envenenan los campos y el agua de sus comunidades con herbicidas. Notifican que hay comunidades desplazadas viviendo y pernoctando a la intemperie y que los niños están enfermando.

4.- Que asesinos confesos de la masacre de Acteal donde asesinaron a 45 indígenas tzotziles, la mayoría de ellos mujeres, niños y ancianos, traicionando a la justicia, fueron puestos en libertad por la Suprema Corte de Justicia de la Nación porque “los expedientes habían sido mal integrados por los ministerios públicos y jueces locales”.

5.- Que el presidente de aquel entonces (E. Zedillo) fue acusado ante una corte de Estados Unidos por su responsabilidad en la masacre de Acteal y el actual gobierno en turno le confirió inmunidad argumentando que “si se le juzgaba por lo que hizo como presidente eso vulneraba la soberanía nacional”. Si Zedillo fuera inocente no necesitaría inmunidad.

6.- Que las condiciones económicas, sociales y políticas en que se encuentra nuestro país son resultado de varias décadas de un régimen político neoliberal, en un sexenio de masacres, decapitaciones y descuartizamientos que se han hecho cotidianos y unas elecciones carentes de legitimidad coronadas con muestras claras del sometimiento del poder judicial a los poderes oligárquicos de los dueños del dinero y de los concesionarios de los medios masivos de información, que intentan mantener al pueblo ajeno a los grandes problemas y soluciones nacionales.

7.- Que los que participamos en la Otra Campaña y nos hemos adherido a la Sexta Declaración de la Selva Lacandona hemos declarado en múltiples ocasiones que los zapatistas no están solos, que si tocan a uno nos tocan a todos y que ellos también son nosotros,

Que hacemos un llamado de alerta a la sociedad de Colima y de México, así como a los observadores y organizaciones internacionales, ya que las condiciones están dadas para que los grupos paramilitares perpetren nuevas masacres contra las comunidades indígenas zapatistas, como las citadas de Acteal y El Bosque; esto con la ya conocida protección de los malos gobiernos oficiales en complicidad con todos los partidos políticos.

Que dicha situación se agrava en tanto que los recursos legales y de diálogo se están agotando para solucionar este problema, así como tantos otros que afectan profundamente a la nación.

Que creemos que Una voz solitaria mientras sea sincera convocará a otras voces hasta que se forme un gran coro. Por ello nuestro colectivo “Lo de menos”, como esa voz, busca el modo de conmover y convocar a la gente de buena voluntad del pueblo de Colima y de México para que nos solidaricemos con las comunidades más dignas de nuestro país.

Que el mal gobierno debe comprender que los zapatistas no están solos, que somos muchos los individuos, colectivos, grupos y organizaciones dentro y fuera del país que estamos al pendiente de lo que sucede en tierras zapatistas y de lo que los partidos políticos y los malos gobiernos de todos los niveles están perpetrando contra ellos por medio de sus grupos paramilitares, así como por medio de sus políticas de cooptación y división.

Que señalamos la necesidad de mecanismos que permitan que el pueblo ejerza su soberanía, que demande a su gobierno el cumplimiento de las leyes y su derecho a ser consultado, ya que el actual sistema no lo contempla, a pesar de que ellos, los propios funcionarios y políticos, al asumir sus puestos juran y protestan cumplir con las leyes en beneficio del pueblo y si no lo hicieren “que el pueblo se los demande”. Que dichos mecanismos no existan es una burla y un insulto al pueblo mexicano y a la democracia que dicen representar.

Que no nos acostumbraremos a las masacres, a los cuerpos humanos desmembrados, decapitados y descuartizados; ni a los militares en las calles en tiempos de paz, ni a los retenes que violan la constitución en el artículo de libre tránsito.

Que no necesitamos, ni queremos esperar a que la violencia nos obligue a desplazarnos de nuestros hogares para reaccionar ante la injusticia -que en este caso se ejerce especialmente hacia nuestros hermanos indígenas- ni para rebelarnos en contra de ella.

Que llamamos al pueblo de Colima y de México a que tome acción, ya que es evidente que la clase política se ha sometido al poder del dinero y se ha olvidado de velar por los intereses del pueblo que dice representar: el pueblo sabe que antiguamente los cárteles con rostros de criminales en las calles ofrecían recompensas; hoy en día, piden votos.

Alto al hostigamiento a las comunidades Zapatistas de Chiapas,

Respeto al derecho que legítima y constitucionalmente les pertenece a las comunidades indígenas mexicanas de organizarse y gobernarse según sus usos y costumbres ancestrales.

El cumplimiento de los Acuerdos de San Andrés.

Alto a la guerra del actual gobierno contra el pueblo que dice representar: bajo la forma de hostigamiento, de Guerra contra el narco, de represión a manifestaciones pacíficas y a luchadores sociales, entre otros.

Respeto a la democracia, lo cual quiere decir literalmente que el pueblo mande y el gobierno obedezca.

Libertad inmediata e incondicional a Alberto Pathistán Gómez y Francisco Santiz López, así como a todos los presos políticos.

El 8 de septiembre de 2012 el comunicado de la Junta de Buen Gobierno Nueva Semilla que va a Producir nos dio a conocer la terrible noticia del ataque del 6 de septiembre de 2012 por parte de grupos priista, entre ellos el grupo paramilitar Paz y Justicia, contra nuestros hermanos en la Comunidad Autónoma Comandante Abel.

Las agresiones en territorio zapatista están siendo en menos tiempo y mas fuertes, estas semanas en el Caracol de Morelia, en la Realidad y hoy en Roberto Barrios, también hablan del miedo del Estado y el mal gobierno contra los que deciden construir un mundo nuevo en el aquí y ahora y tomar en sus manos su destino.

Para nosotros la lucha y resistencia por la construcción de la autonomía de las comunidades zapatistas, sus Juntas de Buen Gobierno, su educación autónoma, sus clínicas de salud, sus cooperativas y muchos proyectos más, nos llenan de alegría pues nos enseñan que otro uno es posible, en el aquí y ahora, una realidad en nuestra cotidianidad.

Ahora, pese a los ya más constantes ataques contra las comunidades zapatistas, el apoyo mutuo, la fraternidad y la solidaridad, la de verdad, tiene que hacerse presente ya, hoy más que nunca, pues los zapatistas no están solos pues estamos nosotros, los que abajo luchamos y resistimos y hemos aprendido, defendido y hecho nuestro el proyecto zapatista.

Siendo el corazón el que nos convoca y como adherentes a la Sexta declaración de la Selva Lacandona y a la Otra Campaña nos sumamos a las actividades y acciones de solidaridad con las comunidades zapatistas.

También nos unimos a la exigencia y responsabilizamos al gobierno federal de Felipe Calderón Hinojosa, al gobierno del estado encabezado por Juan Sabines Guerrero y a todos los responsables intelectuales y materiales.

En la ciudad de Tijuana, realizaremos, junto con los demás colectivos de la Otra Tijuana, un acto de solidaridad con las Bazes de Apoyo Zapatistas el el 30 de septiembre a partir de las 11:00 am en la Plaza Bicentenario.

Con respeto y ánimo les decimos: ¡No están solos, no están solas!

Ante los hechos denunciados los pasados 8 y 12 de septiembre por la Junta de Buen Gobierno “Nueva Semilla que Va a Producir” del Caracol de Roberto Barrios (denuncia completa en http://enlacezapatista.ezln.org.mx/), las personas que formamos parte de Caracol Zaragoza – Red por la Autonomía Zapatista, colectivo de apoyo y solidaridad con las comunidades zapatistas, de la ciudad de Zaragoza, Estado Español, queremos mostrar una vez más nuestra gran preocupación por el clima de enfrentamiento y tensión que se está generando en territorio zapatista.

En los últimos tiempos, son constantes las denuncias de las 5 Juntas de Buen Gobierno por amenazas, provocaciones, y agresiones, siempre llevadas a cabo por organizaciones paramilitares como ARIC, OPDDIC, PAZ Y JUSTICIA, u ORCAO, con total impunidad, colaboración, y protección por parte de los malos gobiernos municipal, estatal y federal.

Queremos recordar que el proyecto de autonomía que practican los zapatistas en Chipas (México) es un proyecto de paz basado en el trabajo y en la organización, rehuyendo de prácticas violentas y evitando la confrontación con el resto de comunidades no zapatistas, con las que conviven y se relacionan en situación de normalidad.

Desde Zaragoza, exigimos de nuevo a Felipe Calderón, Presidente de la República de México y a Juan Sabines Guerrero, Gobernador del Estado de Chiapas, el cese inmediato en su política de hostigamiento a las comunidades zapatistas. Declaramos nuestra repulsa por su permanente política violenta y paramilitarista, y los reconocemos como responsables directos de cualquier acción violenta que se lleve a cabo en comunidades zapatistas.

Reiteramos una vez más nuestro compromiso con nuestros compañeros y compañeras zapatistas, así como nuestra disposición a permanecer vigilantes ante cualquier nuevo ataque que se pueda producir.

Abandonaron las comunidades Comandante Abel y Unión Hidalgo por ataques a balazos.

México, DF. Cerca de un centenar de indígenas, bases de apoyo del Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional (EZLN), de las comunidades Comandante Abel y Unión Hidalgo, municipio autónomo La Dignidad, en Chiapas, se encuentran refugiados en otros poblados, en condiciones que fueron consideradas “graves” por el Frayba.

El pasado día 8 de septiembre fueron desplazadas a tiros 73 personas de Comandante Abel por parte de un grupo considerado paramilitar, vinculado con lo que se conocía como Desarrollo, Paz y Justicia, y con el Partido Revolucionario Institucional. Del 6 al 19 de septiembre, el número de agresores pasó de 55 a 150, y éstos han construido un campamento a 500 metros de la comunidad. Otras familias más debieron abandonar Unión Hidalgo, en Sabanilla.

Una brigada de observación, formada por organismos civiles y colectivos de la Otra Campaña, visitó la zona para encontrarse con los desplazados y dio a conocer un amplio informe. Pudo constatar varios impactos de bala en la escuela autónoma y las tiendas cooperativas, “así como la cimentación de trincheras a la orilla del río a 200 metros del poblado”. Según testimonios de los propios refugiados, se han identificado armas R-15. Durante la noche los agresores atrincherados apuntan con ellas.

Dos días antes de iniciar sus ataques, los paramilitares se reunieron en San Patricio con los funcionarios Eduardo Montoya, Maximiliano Narváez y Noé Castañón León, secretario de Gobierno, junto con agentes de Seguridad Pública. Después llegarían individuos con ropa militar y armados. “Hubo más disparos y nos tiramos al suelo para salvar nuestras vidas”. El día 8 “por tantos disparos, las compañeras agarraron rumbo sin saber a dónde. Hubo más uniformados vestidos de militares disparando”. Menos de 30 pobladores permanecen en la comunidad. La mitad de las 147 hectáreas del poblado están “ocupadas”. En la entrada se encuentra un control de Seguridad Pública estatal desde el día 16, que más bien parece proteger a los invasores. El día 18, los policías realizaron disparos.

Algunas mujeres escaparon rumbo al río. Los niños “se metieron al monte sin saber por dónde salir; los disparos venían de muy cerca, zumbado arriba de nosotros, tocando la pared de la casa”, narraron las mujeres. Una de ellas expuso: “Estaba despachando en la Tienda, de repente se soltaron los disparos y las compañeras salieron de manera dispersa. Tres días sin comer ni beber”. Otra mujer relata: “Las compañeras se escondieron bajo piedra y árbol, teníamos a dos compañeras desaparecidas, hasta 3 días aparecieron en San Marcos”.

Los paramilitares han ocupado la casa de salud autónoma. “Los terrenos están vigilados, buscan desalojar a las bases de apoyo, hay muchas milpas invadidas, desde el río hacia el monte. Animales y pastizales se está desperdiciando, los paramilitares cortan el alambrado, destruyen las cosechas, pero vamos a volver a sembrar”, advierten. Responsabilizan al “mal gobierno”, pues “es su manera de guerra y desgaste para rendirnos. No dejamos nuestra lucha y no nos vamos a rendir”.

También Unión Hidalgo “ha sido muy agredida por los mismos paramilitares”

En la comunidad autónoma San Marcos, los observadores encontraron a los desplazados de Comandante Abel en “condiciones precarias”. Cuatro mujeres están embarazadas, y hay “temor de abortos espontáneos”. Una de las mujeres que estuvieron desaparecidas tras el ataque refiere: “La bala nos perseguía y cuando llegamos a este lugar ya estábamos enfermas. No pasamos por la vereda, sino por la barranca. Sentí que hay un tigre detrás de mi, me perdí, estaba espantada, sentí que ya no estaba en el mundo”. Ahora son atendidos por los promotores de salud y las parteras de San Marcos.

Integrantes de la Junta de Buen Gobierno (JBG) de Roberto Barrios declararon a su vez: “El gobierno compra gentes. Después las convence de quitarnos la tierra”. Exigieron al gobierno “que saque sus paramilitares de tierras zapatistas”. La Seguridad Pública y el Ejército “no deben estar aquí”.

En Zaquitel Ojo de Agua se encuentran desplazados otras doce personas de Unión Hidalgo, donde quedaron algunos jóvenes para cuidar los pollos, cerdos y pavos, sin poder salir. Son amenazados por integrantes del PRI quienes se esconden para dispararles. Por medio de un aparato de sonido, los paramilitares anuncian “día y noche que nos van a comer, porque estamos en otra línea, fuera de la justicia y las leyes”, testimoniaron. “Si los paramilitares no logran tomar la comunidad Comandante Abel, dicen que nos van a masacrar a nosotros”.

“Worldwide Echo in Support of the Zapatistas”

To all our compañer@s, we send warm greetings and embraces on behalf of Movement for Justice in El Barrio, The Other Campaign New York.

In response to the global demand for justice incited by the recent attacks on the Zapatista Support Base Communities (BAZ) carried out by the bad government and its armed death packs, it is with anguished and troubled hearts that we write these words, which are for your immediate consideration.

The most recent acts of repression against the Zapatista Support Base communities of Comandante Abel, Unión Hidalgo, and Moisés Gandhi, in addition to the ongoing terror and threats of displacement endured by the San Marcos Avilés community, have been alarmingly violent. As a direct consequence of the invasions and violence of the attack groups “Peace and Justice” and the Regional Coffee Growers Organization of Ocosingo (Orcao), which operate in paramilitary fashion and as coyotes of the bad government, there are displaced BAZ populations, destruction and theft of food and personal belongings, and profound suffering.

As such, our compas from the Juntas de Buen Gobierno (Good Government Councils) and the affected communities have issued numerous denouncements and have urgently called for the mobilization of global solidarity actions targeting all levels of the bad government of Mexico.

In light of this, and given the continued threat of forced displacement hanging over San Marcos Avilés, it is incumbent upon us to add and bring together all of our hands and voices to prevent another act of aggression from happening against our compas from San Marcos Avilés.

If those from above believe that they can continue waging their violent war against our Zapatista sisters and brothers without repercussions, they are deeply mistaken. This time around, the dignified peoples of the world will have their say.

Before the growing global demand for justice and an end to the current and possible attacks, and in order to expand the reach of the ongoing activities taking place as part of the current First Phase of our Campaign: “Walking the True Word”, which will continue until October 11, we are writing to you to propose that we join forces once more to carry out the Second Phase: “From Truth to Action, Stopping the Repression.” This new phase will be different from the current first one – which aims to raise awareness in our communities about the dire situation that our Zapatista compas of Comandante Abel, Unión Hidalgo, San Marcos Avilés, and Moisés Gandhi, and the Zapatista political prisoner, Francisco Sántiz López, are facing – in that it will be a period of direct action and protest from October 12 to November 17. As you will understand, these dates were chosen for their great significance in the history of indigenous struggles throughout the world: the Day of Indigenous Resistance and the anniversary of the Birth of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN).

SECOND CALL TO ACTION
“FROM TRUTH TO ACTION, STOPPING THE REPRESSION”

First and foremost, we would like to thank all the people who are continuing to give light and life to this worldwide campaign, which for over a month now we have been creating and shaping together. Thank you for sharing this path with us and for continuing to walk alongside us.

Since its beginning at the end of July, when the first call to action was released, the “Worldwide Echo in Support of the Zapatistas” International Campaign has been a meeting point for thousands of people of good heart who have responded to the call of the Zapatistas for support and solidarity.

In addition, in many countries, solidarity cells called “Committees of the True Word” have been organized around this meeting point, and are continuing to build support networks and raise public awareness about the repression currently being faced by the Zapatista communities and the Zapatista political prisoner Sántiz López.

More of these “Committees” continue to be set up every day, as more groups and people of good conscience join the campaign.

Together, we have all started the work of, to borrow a phrase from the wise Old Antonio, “walking the true word”, by organizing in our respective communities, ejidos, towns, neighborhoods, and countries to sow the words of San Marcos Avilés and Francisco Sántiz López like seeds which will grow, in their turn, into a struggle to support them.

More and more people are finding each other every day, seeking and meeting in the darkness and obscurity of lies and indifference which those from above have constructed in order to keep us divided. Fumbling in the dark, we continue to meet each other, and searching, day after day, for a way to break through into the light. As our ancestors say, our collective words contain the essence of life on this planet: memory – and, once spoken and shared, our words become fire.

We remember that this darkness was both born in and gave rise to, that time the EZLN describe as “the long night of those 500 years.” While the political, economic, cultural, and social systems of those from above continue to move our lives and Mother Earth closer towards total extinction, the resistances of those from below continue to build other exits to escape this obscurity.

To prevent us from joining hands and rising from this darkness, those from above have committed to douse out all the lights radiating from dignified people. This is why they are deploying their strategies of violence and destruction, and are attacking, imprisoning, repressing, assaulting, violating, robbing, silencing, and lying to us.

This is also why those from above, those who have created this long night, have chosen as their main target the indigenous peoples of the world, who have made such significant contributions to the struggle against the darkness.

Faced with this threat of planetary extinction, we must mobilize urgently to defend each and every light that illuminates our path towards the construction of another possible world. And as the True Word was and is the first form of light, it is vital that we defend those words which Old Antonio tells us were the first three in every language: “democracy, freedom, justice.”

It is no coincidence that these three words cannot be found in the governments, jails, schools, mass media, or the other institutions serving the privileges of those from above. Nor is it a coincidence that these same three words are alive, in many different ways, among the dignified people from below, especially the indigenous people of Mexico and the world. While those from above continue to attack and destroy these lights, we will continue to defend and create more lights, more solutions, more worlds.

Even though those from above are using the lies which give the night its darkness to keep us divided, in our hearts we carry that which makes the light shine…This is called truth.

In order to actively support the defense of the light that shines from the Zapatistas, an exemplary indigenous movement, whose struggle has always been for and with both indigenous and non-indigenous peoples alike, we call on and invite everyone once again to join this campaign, and to carry out its second phase, which will consist of a month of strategic and direct actions.

Beginning on October 12, the Day of Indigenous Resistance, and lasting until November 17, the Anniversary of the Birth of the EZLN, we invite everyone to organize actions – according to our own ways and abilities – in our respective communities and countries during this period, so as to echo the call of the indigenous Zapatista communities of Comandante Abel, Unión Hidalgo, San Marcos Avilés, and Moisés Gandhi, and the indigenous Zapatista political prisoner Francisco Sántiz López.

During these days of action, compas, let us unite, honor, remember, and support all the Zapatista communities and in particular, the following ones, as they are presently under siege:

• Comandante Abel: Beginning on September 6th and 7th, and until the present, the paramilitary group “Peace and Justice” has carried out an armed invasion into Zapatista territory in the Comandante Abel ejido (BAZ). As a result, the entire community was violently displaced and several people were missing for some time while they sought refuge from the violence. Many remain severely ill. The Zapatistas’ land remains occupied by the aggressors, who are currently constructing their own houses as a way to perpetuate the occupation.
• Unión Hidalgo: Similarly, this Zapatista community was displaced by the violent aggressions of “Peace and Justice.” With the use of firearms, the aggressors have managed to occupy and expand their invasion throughout a significant section of the community. The situation is made worse because many compas are ill.
• Moisés Gandhi: Throughout the month of August, the Zapatista Support Base members of this community have suffered violent attacks and threats of forced displacement by the group of “coyotes” called the Regional Coffee Growers Organization of Ocosingo (Orcao).
• As our compas from San Marcos Avilés detail in their video-message, available below, they have lived in a constant nightmare at the hands of a local attack group, with backing from political party members, for having opened their own autonomous school “Emiliano Zapata” in 2010. From forced displacement to sexual assault, these compas have suffered numerous forms of violence and repression solely for wanting to live with dignity and freedom as indigenous peoples.

At the same time, our compañero Francisco Sántiz López, a Zapatisa Support Base member and indigenous Tzeltal, has been imprisoned since December 2011 for crimes that he did not commit. His only offense, as has been stated over and over again, is that of being a Zapatista Support Base member. For this reason, he is being held as a hostage of the Mexican State.

Con muchísima preocupación observamos la represión, el despojo y la violencia en contra de nuestr@s herman@s zapatistas en Chiapas, México.Protestamos enérgicamente contra estos crimenes de parte de los tres niveles de gobierno en México y seguimos informando al público.

The UK Zapatista Solidarity Network would like to propose that we all issue a joint statement from our various places in every corner of the world. We invite everyone to sign this worldwide declaration in support of the dignified struggle of the Zapatista support bases of San Marcos Avilés and the Zapatista political prisoner Francisco Sántiz López. This declaration is being circulated in association with the “Worldwide Echo in Support of the Zapatistas: Freedom and Justice for San Marcos Avilés and Sántiz López” Campaign, called by our compañer@s of the Other Campaign New York.

The plan is for the declaration to be presented, with all the collected signatures, during the second phase of the Campaign in September 2012.

We view with profound concern, and demand an immediate end to, the continued acts of intimidation and aggression and the human rights abuses being committed against members of the Zapatista support base community in San Marcos Avilés, official municipality of Chilón, Chiapas, Mexico. We also call for the immediate liberation of the Zapatista political prisoner Francisco Sántiz López, who has been jailed since December 2011 in a flagrant abuse of justice.

Responding to the numerous denouncements and calls issued by the Zapatista Good Government Junta of Oventic and the community of San Marcos Avilés, we manifest in this declaration our solidarity with our brothers and sisters there, as well as with Francisco Sántiz López.

We are aware of the very serious new threats being made against the community of San Marcos Avilés by representatives of political parties in the area. Of particular concern are the open and blatant threats of displacement, physical violence, and the on-going climate of hostility promoted by these individuals. We consider such reprehensible aggression to be extremely serious in light of the events of September 2010, when vigilantes from the Green Ecological Party of Mexico (PVEM), the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD), led by Lorenzo Ruiz Gómez and Vicente Ruiz López, attacked Zapatista support bases, displacing 170 people and destroying their property and crops.

In relation to the case of Francisco Sántiz López, a Zapatista support base from the Banavil ejido of Tenejapa, who was originally detained in December 2011 under false charges of having orchestrated a conflict in Banavil, we affirm the evidence collected by the Fray Bartolomé de Las Casas Human Rights Centre and recounted by several witnesses, that he indeed was not present at the location where the events took place on 4th December 2011. His false imprisonment and the continued refusal of local authorities to examine this evidence are, in our view, further indication that the judicial system in Chiapas is wielded as tool of political repression against those who struggle for justice.

In respect to current events in San Marcos Avilés, we demand:

• An immediate end to all death threats, verbal and physical harassment, and threats against the property and well-being of the Zapatista Support Base members by elements of the political parties in the San Marcos Avilés ejido

• Protection for the life and safety of the Zapatista support base members of San Marcos Avilés

• Respect for the Zapatista Support Base community’s inalienable right to autonomy as indigenous peoples, as enshrined in the internationally recognized ILO Convention No. 169 and the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, both of which the government of Mexico has signed

In respect of the case of Zapatista support base Francisco Sántiz López, we demand his immediate and unconditional release, as well as a swift investigation and prosecution of the perpetrators of violence in Banavil, Tenejapa Municipality, Chiapas.

To our brothers and sisters suffering injustice and violence in Chiapas, we remind you that your struggle is not carried out in silence, nor is it invisible. Indeed, countless individuals, organizations, and communities from around the world remain vigilant regarding your situation and have joined an international campaign in solidarity with your struggle. For our part, from cities across the world we send you a warm embrace, to let you know that we know who you are and what you are fighting for, and to say that we will do whatever we can to support you. We will all continue to make an echo of your just demands, an echo that resonates with the collective heartbeat of the earth.
