San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chis. 29 de abril. La exigencia de liberación de los cinco presos políticos de San Sebastián Bachajón, adherentes a la otra campaña, quienes cumplieron 85 días encarcelados, alcanzó esta semana repercusión estatal, nacional e internacional, ignorada por los medios de comunicación, pero no por ello menos amplia.

Muy significativamente, todos estos ámbitos se engarzaron con la convocatoria a la Marcha Nacional por la Justicia y Contra la Impunidad –convocada por el poeta Javier Sicilia– y el anuncio de la comandancia del Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional (EZLN) de que participarán sus bases de apoyo –en su primera movilización pública en años recientes– y se sumarán la otra campaña en todo el país y la Zezta Internacional.
A nivel estatal se expresaron con elocuencia Las Abejas, de Acteal; los ejidatarios choles en defensa de sus tierras en el ejido de Tila y el Consejo Regional Autónomo de la Zona Costa, demandando, como dice este último, al gobierno represor de Juan Sabines y Felipe Calderón la libertad inmediata e incondicional de Juan Aguilar Guzmán, Jerónimo Guzmán Méndez, Domingo Pérez Álvaro, Domingo García Gómez y Mariano Demeza Silvano, perseguidos por luchar y defender su tierra y territorio.

Las protestas y movilizaciones se potenciaron rápidamente. Iniciadas el 24 y concluidas este jueves 28, sumaron 63 actos en 22 países. También conmemoraron el aniversario del asesinato de Bety Cariño Trujillo y Jyri Jakkola, cuando participaban en una caravana humanitaria a San Juan Copala, Oaxaca. Pero si el día 27 los colectivos en París, Dorset o Barcelona realizaban acciones separadas ante los consulado mexicanos con la misma exigencia de liberar a los tzeltales de Bachajón, al día siguiente ya convergían en un clamor por el alto a la guerra de Felipe Calderón, firmado por 16 colectivos y organizaciones de Francia, Italia, Suiza, Alemania, Austria, Grecia y Estado Español, que dice:
Desde lejos vemos con preocupación y rabia que México está en guerra, pero no es una sola guerra, son guerras que se han ido sobreponiendo unas sobre otras, son las múltiples guerras de arriba por someter el abajo rebelde en sus múltiples formas, amenazando al que denuncia, golpeando al que se solidariza, encarcelando al que protesta, asesinando al que se organiza.

Y precisan: “Una nueva escalada de represión y violencia recae contra los compañeros bases de apoyo del EZLN y adherentes a la otra campaña”. En Frontera Comalapa, hace pocos días, autoridades municipales y miembros de partidos políticos reprimieron y golpearon a los campesinos zapatistas de Monte Redondo, municipio autónomo de Tierra y Libertad. En este ataque el campesino zapatista Patricio Domínguez Vázquez fue agredido físicamente, le quemaron su casa y para colmo está privado de su libertad en el penal de Motozintla.

Las organizaciones europeas urgen por la liberación de los presos políticos de la Voz del Amate, San Sebastián Bachajón, Mitzitón y Jotolá (Chiapas), así como de Loxichas y Xanica (Oaxaca) y Guerrero.

Como explican los ejidatarios de Tila, la escalada represiva pretende destruir la colectividad del campesino y nuestras culturas indígenas, no se valoran nuestros usos y costumbres, sólo busca los recursos naturales; las leyes son utilizadas y torcidas por el gobierno para favorecer a empresarios, terratenientes y latifundistas, lo vemos claramente en nuestro ejido y en San Sebastián.

Las acciones se extendieron a Sudáfrica, Nueva Zelanda, Eslovenia, India y Filipinas, siempre informando el contexto en que los cinco de Bachajón “fueron detenidos por defender sus tierras contra el proyecto ecoturístico de ‘desarrollo’ gubernamental Centro Integralmente Planificado Palenque”.

El Movimiento por Justicia del Barrio realizó acciones en Nueva York y divulgó un mensaje de organizaciones de Egipto a la campaña por la liberación de los cinco de Bachajón, como respuesta a un videomensaje y una carta de apoyo. El nuevo mensaje incluye un video (www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3uIWkjKOlU). Los remitentes egipcios explican que escribieron la canción en los días que vieron temblar y caer el poder y la dictatura, y recoge lo que decían los carteles en las plazas.

Finalmente, 23 organizaciones de la otra campaña en varios estados anunciaron hoy haber iniciado un proceso de articulación nacional contra el mal gobierno y el mercado, a favor de la vida, la madre tierra y en defensa de los bienes naturales, compartiendo la construcción de las autonomías. Y que respondiendo a las convocatorias de Javier Sicilia y del EZLN se movilizarán del 5 al 8 de mayo en Baja California, Chiapas, Coahuila, Jalisco, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Nuevo León, Nayarit, Puebla y ciudad de México, demandando alto a la violencia contra el pueblo de México.

On April 24, the New York based Movement for Justice in El Barrio (MJB) will launch several days of global action calling for the release of five indigenous Zapatista supporters, who are being held by the Mexican police in the state of Chiapas. The “Bachajón 5,” as they are called, were arrested on February 3 when approximately 300 state police raided a meeting of indigenous Zapatista supporters in San Sebastian Bachajón, Chiapas. One hundred and seventeen people were arrested. After intense international pressure, all were released but the “Bachajón 5,” who are facing serious charges; one is accused of murder, one of attempted murder, and all five are accused of “crimes against the peace.

Human rights organizations have called the arrests, intimidation and imprisonment a fabricated conflict to strip the community, particularly the Zapatistas, of their territorial rights.

“The State did not intervene to prevent confrontations. Instead, it planned a strategy for territorial control in the zone,” the Center for Human Rights Fray Bartholome de las Casas in Chiapas, Mexico told reporter Kristin Bricker. “Territory is an essential element of a dignified life and the clear exercise of indigenous peoples’ collective rights run contrary to the business interests that the federal and state government have promised to private investors. Projects that benefit Mexican and foreign investors and cause poverty and death for residents.”

The Mexican government is looking to develop the region with many, potentially massive, multinational ecotourism projects. Bachajón, where the arrests took place, is located near the popular tourist destination of Agua Azul and the Mayan archeological site Palenque. According to leaked government documents, reported by Bricker, “the government plans to have multinational corporations build a multi-million dollar ecotourism hotel on indigenous land.”

The leaked “Palenque-Agua Azul Waterfalls Development Strategy” PowerPoint, which was prepared by a U.S. consulting firm, argues:

“The state and local government need to ensure that tourists that visit Chiapas and Palenque feel safe and protected. The Zapatista movement is still strongly associated with Chiapas . . . Many of those unfamiliar with the region still consider Chiapas to be unsafe . . . The state needs to protect the developers and hotel operators against the perception of political instability . . . Before attracting investments, the state must resolve land acquisition and access problems. The acquisition of lands adjacent to the waterfalls is vital.”

Earlier this month, the MJB called for the first “5 Days of Action for the Bachajón 5.”

However, on April 9 according to the newest MJB communiqué, more than 800 police and military officers again descended on the community. They violently displaced community members from Bachajón in order to control transportation in and out of the area. Three more people were disappeared.

According to anonymous first-hand testimony from one arrested member of the Bachajón 5, the prison conditions are deplorable:

“They only give us food and scarce amounts of water once a day, and we have gotten sick due to the horrible food that they give us. They do not provide any medication. And when our relatives visit us, they deny us the food that they have brought for us, and they force them to remove their clothing in order to be searched.”

From abroad, MJB—a member of the Otra Campaña and largely composed of Mexican migrants—has been leading the international fight to free the “Bachajón 5.”

The following is an excerpt from the April 10, 2011 MJB communiqué:

It is clear that all of these acts of aggression were provoked by the organized resistance of the people of Bachajón and by the national and international pressure that we generated via our solidarity actions during the “Worldwide Day of Action for the Liberation of the Political Prisoners of San Sebastian Bachajón” and “5 Days of Worldwide Action for the Bachajón 5.”

In agreement with this account, a letter recently released by the World Organization Against Torture (OMCT), headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, confirms that

“it is feared that the threats and acts of harassment they are suffering are the result of the solidarity actions which are taking place in support of the prisoners, in particular those of the campaign ‘5 Days of Worldwide Action for the Bachajón 5’ which were held between the 1st and 5th of April 2011.”

In spite of the numerous threats and harassment, in spite of all the hordes of anti-riot helicopters and vans, our sisters and brothers of San Sebastián Bachajón have not given up. Rather, they are advancing in their struggle.

For this reason, we cannot give up either. We must not rest until our 5 brothers are in complete freedom and until the Bachajón community’s just demands are respected.

As such, we propose the following:

1) That we anticipate and remain vigilant for anything that happens. Likewise, that we be prepared to organize immediate, emergency actions if the bad government inflicts any form of violence upon the ejidatatri@s of San Sebastian Bachajón during the following weeks.

2) That we unite our forces once again to realize “5 MORE Days of Worldwide Action for the Bachajón 5” in order to continue fighting together to free the 5 political prisoners of San Sebastián Bachajón, who are adherents of The Other Campaign, and in support of the struggle for dignity and autonomy that the ejidatari@s of Bachajón are carrying out.

Through our solidarity actions, together, we were able to make echo the true history of the Bachajón people and their struggle to defend their lands and natural resources from the avarice of the multinational corporations and
their political lackeys. Both of whom seek to dispossess the ejidatari@s from their tollbooth in order to seize the natural wealth that exists in the ejido’s territory. (The second video-message on this can be seen at this

Each time we come together to denounce and contest the bad government and neoliberalism that do all of this simply to accumulate more wealth, we create inalterable cracks in the walls of the prison that confines our five brothers. Now more than ever, we must continue to apply pressure so that these cracks turn into dust.

Once more, we invite each one of you, from every part of the world, in your own way, to realize actions to demand that the PRD governor and repressor Juan Sabines Guerrero immediately release each one of the five political prisoners.

We propose that together we join forces by organizing actions–from our respective locations and different forms of struggle—such as demonstrations, marches, informative street actions, flyering, public forums, theater, teach-ins, and any other activity to bring about:

“5 MORE Days of Worldwide Action for the Bachajón 5” from April 24th to the 28th.

Denunciamos públicamente la represión de este mal gobierno ya que el pasado 8 de abril hombres y mujeres ejidatarios de San Sebastian Bachajón adherentes a la otra campaña decidieron tomar la caseta de cobro en una forma pacífica, donde el personal de gobierno lo tenían ya que el pasado 2 de febrero violentamente nos despojo de nuestros derechos juto cuando queríamos construir una autonomía mas digna con justicia democracia y libertad nos manda la represión y la violencia amenazas e intimidaciones de parte de grupo priista Fundación Colosioy verde ecologista actualmente la otra civil creado por el mismo gobierno de Juan Sabines y el sec. Gob. Noé Castañón León productos de sus reuniones privados con el comisariado oficial c. Francisco Guzmán Jiménez principal negociador de la transnacional responsable de lo que ha surgido la hola de violencia, robo, asalto en carretera, y etc. Como el pasado 9 de abril después de la recuperación de la caseta vino la represión de este mal gobierno por la presencia de militares federales y judiciales vestidos de civil para desalojarnos violentamente haciendo disparos de arma de fuego sin importar la integridad de los niños hombres y mujeres que llevaban cargando a sus hijos la clara intención del gobierno acompañados por un grupo de priistas servidores públicos bajo interés al servicio del gobierno violando nuestros derechos como pueblos indígenas que somos que dependemos de nuestra tierras y sus recursos que es herencia de nuestros ante pasados actualmente el gobierno le ha interesado para fines lucrativos, hoy el gobierno estatal y federal han manipulado a los medios y a los turistas internacionales que somos delincuentes y asaltantes de carretera, cuando los verdaderos asaltantes y delincuentes es del gobierno expertos en fabricar delito tal como el caso de los 5 presos políticos detenidos el pasado 3 de febrero que siguen presos injustamente secuestrados por este mal gobierno como a un así el gran ejemplo para la sociedad y al pueblo en general el pasado 24 de marzo asaltaron un camión de turistas maestros jubilados en el tramo de crucero de agua azul a la cascadas en las narices de los preventivos no hicieron nada. Otro ejemplo el 31 de marzo hubo otro robo un vehículo doble cabina y mercancía tela para hacer nauguas. 2 de abril se detuvo a 2 delincuentes se les decomiso 20 kilo al parecer mariguana 6 armas largas calibre 22 y una pistola calibre 38 y artículos robados lo pusieron a disposición de la autoridades y luego aparecio la justicia un agente auxiliar de nombre Manuel Gómez Sarago un priista el C. Juan Deara Demeza y el coordinador de la Fundación Colosio Manuel Jiménez moreno y el actual regidor del ayuntamiento profesor Sebastián Ruiz Álvaro actual regidor del ayuntamiento de Chilón, principales responsables de negociar la libertad del delincuente actualmente libre el c. Julián Jiménez Morales y el c Pedro Silvano con claras evidencias a un ahí están libres actualmente agua azul esta cada vez mas militarizado con la presencia de militares armados y agentes federales y preventivos no. Para cuidar a los turistas si no para reprimir a los que defienden sus tierras digno de construir un mundo justo y verdadero esperamos que turistas visiten Agua Azul sepan que lo que está pasando detrás de esa panorama de presencia de policías está la delincuencia en complicidad con miembros partidistas y oficialistas llenos de avaricia para querer adueñarse de nuestras tierras, que quede para el gobierno, no somos asesinos, somos una organización pacífica y lo hemos demostrado muchas veces que la mejor arma que tenemos es nuestras palabras de hombre y mujeres que claman justicia democracia y libertad en la toma de nuestra decisiones y no ejercemos violencia ejercemos autonomía.

We talk with a compa of ours on the ground in Chiapas, who reports on some of the most recent clashes of the low-intensity war in Mitzitón, Bachajón, and Tila. We use these events, and the bigger picture in which they take place, to help us frame the conversation about the new letter from Subcomandante Marcos: “Notes on War.”

Today, Monday 11 April, two days after being again disposessed of their lands, the compañeros from ejido San Sebastián Bachajón share their words with all of those who have been in solidarity with their problems. In Agua Azul, in the ejido Bachajón, there is a tense tranquility due to the presence of police and the army. The compañeros reaffirm their committment to continue struggling and ask the national and international community to stay alert to what may happen.
