COMUNICADO DE PRENSA

Tenosique, Tabasco, 3 de septiembre de 2011.

El domingo 28 de agosto se presentaron en la oficina del Centro de Derechos Humanos del Usumacinta, A.C., dos personas de origen guatemalteco para pedir asesoría pues según su testimonio habían sido desalojados de su territorio.

La comunidad desalojada lleva por nombre Nueva Esperanza, del Municipio de La Libertad en el Departamento de El Petén. Las personas desalojadas son 60 niños, 96 mujeres, 100 hombres y 30 personas de la tercera edad.

Miembros de este Centro de Derechos Humanos hicieron una visita al lugar, las personas nos relataron que el martes23 de agosto fueron desalojadas con violencia por parte del Ejército guatemalteco, la policía nacional y el Consejo Nacional de Áreas Protegidas (CONAP), que en presencia de personal de derechos humanos de Guatemala ejecutaron la orden de desalojo, la cual hicieron de forma violenta, quemándole sus casas, escuela y centro de salud. Ellos se refugiaron en la comunidad de Nuevo Progreso del municipio de Tenosique, Tabasco, a solo 500 metros de la línea fronteriza. No se les permitió sacar sus pertenencias.

Hasta ahora ninguna autoridad de Guatemala se ha presentado a dialogar con ellos. Por parte del Estado mexicano han acudido representantes de los tres niveles de gobierno, el grupo Beta y la CNDH para ofrecer ayuda humanitaria y verificar las condiciones en las que se encuentran.

Hemos constatado las infrahumanas condiciones en las que se encuentran sobreviviendo, pues están literalmente a la intemperie, cubriéndose sólo con algunas lonas y chozas construidas provisionalmente. Miembros del Ejército y la Policía nacional de Guatemala se encuentran muy cerca del lugar donde están los desplazados impidiendo el retorno a sus tierras y el tránsito de cualquier persona.

Ante esta situación nos solidarizamos en las exigencias de las familias desalojadas de que el gobierno de su país escuche y atienda sus justos reclamos de regresar a su tierra y se les reparen los daños causados.

Hacemos un llamado a la comunidad nacional e internacional para que haga llegar al Gobierno de Guatemala el repudio por los actos de desalojo y despojo de forma violenta y por las condiciones en las que se encuentran sobreviviendo.

Así mismo convocamos a la sociedad civil para que en el marco de la jornada mundial del migrante a celebrarse el próximo domingo 4 de septiembre, lo hagamos en el lugar donde se encuentra la comunidad Nueva Esperanza, esperando respuesta a sus justos reclamos. La cita es a partir de las 10:00 de la mañana.

Representatives from 13 indigenous communities in the south of the municipality of San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas, denounced today (Aug 31) the works that started this month to build in their territory a trash dump for the city of San Cristóbal, without authorization or consultation to the communities and with dire consequences for them. The representatives of the communities demanded a halt to the construction and announced that they will take further actions if their demands are not met.

On June 11th, 2011, the South Central Farmers remember the aggressive eviction that took place 5 years prior. After having cultivated what was thought to be the largest urban farm in the United States, the Los Angeles Sheriffs Department carried out an eviction imposed by owner and developer of the plot, Ralph Horowitz. For nearly 14 years, the South Central Farmers worked the 14-acre plot that was located in the heart of the Alameda Corridor by the community of South Central Los Angeles, feeding hundreds of families in the community and providing a model for autonomous greenspace in urban areas. This is a brief update discussing where the South Central Farmers are currently in there struggle to get back their land.

On July 26^th the Caravan Paso a Paso Hacia la paz “Step by Step toward Peace..departed from the Guatamala-Mexico Border and traveled northwards to the Mexican state of Veracruz and then up to Mexico City. The Caravans objective was to bring attention to and to document the horrific realities of migrants who are migrating from Guatemala and Mexico to the U.S. In our next segment we talk to Alejandro Reyes of Radio Zapatista who was able to take part in this caravan. In the first part of this extensive interview Alejandro explains the objective of the caravan and tells the stories of many individuals and families he met on the caravan. In that latter part of this interview we explore the economic and political contexts that the caravan is bringing attention to.
