What we see with the dramatic increase in repression is the beginning of a campaign that will intensify this “Year of Tourism” in order to open the way for public works that will turn the state of Chiapas into an attractive “Green Cancún.” Behind these plans are large sums of money, large interests, and even large agreements, such as the recent one to establish large green zones in Chiapas for the carbon credit market. About this, the population of Chiapas knows little or nothing. In this article, we analyze the background of the dramatic increase in state repression and violence in Chiapas as of February 2011.
