Report on actions in Dorset, UK, for Bachajón and political prisoners

Dorset, United Kingdom
The Worldwide Day of Action for the Liberation of the Political Prisoners of San Sebastian Bachajón and the International Day in Honor of the Women of the Other Campaign
The Dorset Chiapas Solidarity Group responded to the call from the Movement for Justice in El Barrio for groups throughout the world to hold actions around International Women’s Day in solidarity with the political prisoners of San Sebastian Bachajón, Chiapas, Mexico. Six out of 117 people remain imprisoned because the state government wants to take their land and use it for transnational developments, including the Tourist Plan for Chiapas.
Leaflets were handed out, and people who nothing of what is happening in Mexico beyond the “war on drugs” learned of the brave communities and groups resisting displacement and dispossession and repression from the three levels of government in Mexico. Actions were taking place in many countries, in Edinburgh, New York, the Phillipines, Barcelona, South Africa, France and Germany, among others, as well of course as in Mexico.
Later there was an opportunity to watch a video message sent from the brothers and sisters in San Sebastian Bachajón, acknowledging the message of love and solidarity sent to them to help strengthen their resistance. This message has also been watched in countries throughout the world, for our resistance is transnational too!

Interview about People’s Hearing on Racial Profiling and Police Violence

We interview Mike Flynn  the President of the National Lawyers Guild San Francisco Chapter about the recent People’s Hearing on Racial Profiling and Police Violence that happened this month on Feb 19th and 20th. Mike was one of many organizers who made this space possible. Mike speaks about the history of the organizing efforts and specifically what made this critical space possible, the structure of the people’s hearing, why such a strategy is necessary a midst a low intensity war happening in communities of color here in oakland, and the success of this specific space.

Relatos Zapatistas Programa De Marzo

The focus of this month’s show is war. War is everywhere, it surrounds us and permeates every aspect of society; war is strikingly apparent, captivating our eyes and ears with gunfire and explosions, but it is also silent, subtle, seemingly innocuous, difficult and at times even impossible to see. War is also everyday life under capitalism. War therefore takes many different forms simultaneously. What we want to do today is not simply report about sites of war but examine some of war’s different modes, the forms that war takes across space and time. We will look at three formations: Mexico and the narco-state, North Africa and the repressive state apparatus, and the Bay Area and the police state. Despite their differences, all of these geopolitical sites have experienced the varying but devastating effects of war and, furthermore, they all recognize that the enemy is the state in some form or another, state agents or institutions like the police or the military tied to bureaucracies of power and the reins of capital.

Action for Bachajon in Edimburgh, Scotland

March 7th, 2011 – Day of Action for Immediate Release of Bachajon Prisoners

March 2011

In Edinburgh, a demonstration on the main street of the city was carried out to join the day of action for the release of San Sebastian Bachajon Prisoners. Demanding, the federal and Chiapas state governments to stop the repression against communities in resistance, both Zapatistas and adherents to The Other Campaign.

Today 7th March members of Edinburgh Chiapas Solidarity Group set up a stall and giant banner in the centre of Scotland’s capital and distributed hundreds of leaflets in solidarity with the comrades of San Sebastian Bachajon.

Demanding the release of the prisoners from San Sebastian Bachajon and all political prisoners, the protesters denounced the attacks on communities such as San Sebastian Bachajon who are resisting attempts by the state and big business to take over their land for money-making projects, like those envisaged in the Tourist Plan for Chiapas.

The leaflets also gave contact details for the Mexican Ambassador to the UK, with a weblink to a sample letter to the Ambassador urging that the Mexican authorities release the prisoners from San Sebastian Bachajon.

Much attention was attracted by a giant banner proclaiming
“MEXICO….
Sun Fun … Bloomin nice beaches
Torture … Death Squads….Human Rights Breaches”.
The banner was draped over the famous Duke of Wellington statue in Princes Street, Edinburgh’s main thoroughfare for over two hours, and was accompanied by placards and posters proclaiming SOLIDARITY WITH THE OTHER CAMPAIGN IN SAN SEBASTIAN BACHAJON and NO TO REPRESSION IN CHIAPAS.

A member of Edinburgh Chiapas Solidarity Group stated: “The ideals of The Other Campaign are to bring together struggles for communal control of resources all over the planet. As our leaflet says: “If you go for one of us you go for all of us!”
