“In Memory” / February Program

Today’s show is a difficult one. This past month—actually, within the course of a single week—Zapatistas, Other Campaign adherents and sympathizers around the world lost two extraordinary compañeros. John Ross, who passed away on January 17, was an author, poet, journalist, and activist who left his home in New York in 1957, following the Beat Trail to Mexico City.  John wrote extensively about the Zapatista struggle and Mexican politics, dividing his time mostly between Mexico City and San Francisco.  John personifies the kind of physical and mental migrations we hope to make in the best of worlds in our own attempts to define and practice a solidarity that goes beyond its conventional, privileged form. It moves beyond the global as something that’s always “over there,” to a way of imagining a politics that actively resists and undoes borders, creating community and encounter in all that we do…

Denunciation from Other Campaign members of San Sebastian Bachajon

EJIDO SAN SEBASTIÁN BACHAJON ADHERENTS TO THE OTHER CAMPAIGN OF THE SIXTH DECLARATION OF THE LACANDON JUNGLE, CHIAPAS, MEXICO.

TO THE NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL OTHER CAMPAIGN.TO CIVIL SOCIETY.

TO THE INDEPENDENT AND DEMOCRATIC ORGANIZATIONS.

TO NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS.

TO PUBLIC OPINION

We Publicly denounce the state government of Juan Sabines and his bad government collaborators and C. Francisco Guzman Jimenez and C. Carmen Aguilar Gomez I, Carmen Aguilar Gomez II and C. Juan Alvarado Moreno, Manuel Jimenez Moreno, Juan Jimenez Garcia, Miguel Ruiz Hernandez, Jesus Ruiz Hernandez, Manuel Deara Gomez, Sebastian Ruiz Alvaro and Melchorio Perez Moreno that since February 2 organized a group of PRI members to take possession of the Agua Azul ticket booth with excessive violence accompanied by one hundred police from different agencies of the bad government where since 2 years ago the organization had recuperated it with effort after the government had taken possession of that ecotourist center to make their profitable plans and transnational investments after various incarcerations it repeated it the same way again.

Where currently last February 3, 2011, with excessive violence, approximately 121 Other Campaign members were unjustly detained, blamed for several crimes as has always been done thanks to the shameless ideology of Noé Castañon León, Juan Sabines’ Secretary of Government to repeat again the human rights violations to be able to recuperate the ecotourist center’s ticket booth for the bad government’s projects.

They are the ones principally responsible for what has now emerged since currently there are 2 disappeared deprived of their freedom without knowing where they have them. Like the organizations that we are we demand the quick release of our compañeros since we are not criminals. The criminals are the aforementioned.

We are an organization that struggles and we seek a better world with hopes to continue living with peace and tranquility, to protect our natural resources from our Mother Earth that our ancestors have left to us. We are an organization that has the dignity of showing the government that we are not alone. We ask the rest of the national and international organizations for their solidarity in this noble cause for the freedom of our compañeros, detained for the crimes that it imputes to them for defending their land, their resources and autonomy.

SINCERELYLAND and LIBERTY!

Communique by the Network against Repression on the detention of adherents to the Other Campaign from San Sebastián Bachajón

This February 3 the federal and state police and members of the Mexican army detained 140 compañeros from the Ejido of San Sebastián Bachajón during a demonstration after their tollbooth to the waterfalls of Agua Azul was taken from them by a group of PRI sympathizers supported by members of the police.

The hypocrisy of the governor of Chiapas, Juan Sabines, is evident, since he says one thing and does another; his words of admiration to Samuel Ruiz are one thing, his hatred and violence against indigenous peoples and their independent organizations is another. He does not tolerate that his former peons talk back to him, much less that they defend their lands.

What do we see in Chiapas beyond the campaigns promoted in commercial media, which attempt to give a false image of the southeastern state? Only repression ad dispossession.

This isn’t the first time that Juan Sabines attacks social activists in both zapatista communities and those which are adherents to the Other Campaign; Sabines attacks a social movement that struggles for justice, for their rights to live with dignity, for the construction of a new country and a new world: there are our 140 compañeros detained.

PRI supporters were not touched when they took the tollbooth, but our compañeros from Bachajón were detained precisely when they struggled to recuperate what they had obtained with their efforts.

The Network against Repression and for Solidarity remains alert to this unfair situation and will undertake the necessary actions in solidarity with our compañeros from Chiapas.

We call on all our compañeros and compañeras in Mexico to undertake actions in solidarity and demosntrations against this agression of the PRI and the government of Sabines against our compañeros from San Sebastián Bachajón, according to your ways and methods.

We call on our compañeros and compañeras from the Sezta Internazional to undertake urgent actions in support and solidarity.
