Comunicado de San Sebastián Bachajón, 7 mar 2011

The adherents to the Other Campaign from the ejido of San Sebastián Bachajón began today an action for an undetermined time in the crossroads to the waterfalls of Agua Azul, on the Palenque-Ocosingo highway. Feminicides in Chiapas

Although much has been said about feminicides in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, almost nothing is known about the violence against women in the state of Chiapas. However, according to data obtained by the Women’s Collective of San Cristóbal de Las Casas (Colem), Chiapas is the state with the most feminicides in Mexico. In interview with Radio Zapatista, Martha Figueroa from Colem and Alma from the Center for Women’s Rights of Chiapas speak about the situation of women in this state.

Aunque mucho se ha dicho sobre los feminicidios en Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, casi nada se sabe sobre la violencia contra la mujer en el estado de Chiapas. Sin embargo, según datos obtenidos por el Colectivo de Mujeres de San Cristóbal de Las Casas (Colem), Chiapas es el estado con mayor número de feminicidios en México. En entrevista a Radio Zapatista, Martha Figueroa del Colem y la compañera Alma del Centro de Derechos de la Mujer de Chiapas hablan sobre la situación de la mujer en este estado.

Given the alarming increase in repression and violence in Chiapas and the political prisoners, we interviewed today:

Representative from the community of San Sebastián Bachajón, who spoke about the events on Feb 2 and 3 and the current situation of political prisoners.(Descarga aquí)  

Lawyer from the Digna Ochoa Human Rights Center, who spoke on the events on the coast of Chiapas and the situation of the three prisoners from that center.(Descarga aquí)  

Member of the community of Mitzitón, who spoke on the situation currently lived by the community after the new attack by members of the paramlitary organization Army of God. For more than two weeks, 219 men, 302 women, and many children are living in the church and the community building, fearing new attacks.(Descarga aquí)

Conferencia de prensa del pueblo Ch’ol de Tila, Chiapas

Representatives from Ejido Tila and members of Frayba gave a press conference on 8 Feb 2011 to share the current situtation on the defense of their land and territory. The dispossession of 130 hectares of ejido Tila, by the Chiapas state governor, the Congress of the State, Registro público de la propiedad y del comercio and the municipal government of Tila, will be analyzed by the Mexican Supreme Court. Because of this, the authorities of Tila will have an audience with the Minister Olga María del Carmen Sánchez Cordero on 8 Feb 2011 to argue on the importance of protecting the indigenous Ch’ol territory of Tila.

ESPECIAL: Homenaje a Don Samuel Ruiz

A special homage to Emeritus Bishop of San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Samuel Ruiz García, who died on January 24, 2011, after more than 50 years as a great defender of the rights of indigenous peoples and the poor in Mexico. A liberation theologist, Tatik Samuel was mediator in the dialogs between the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) and the Mexican government, and was President of the Fray Bartolomé de Las Casas Human Rights Center (Frayba) since its foundation in 1989. In this homage, we bring together autios from his funeral in Chiapas, voices from some of his many admirers, the communique by the EZLN on his death, and interviews with Don Samuel on his work in Chiapas.(Descarga aquí)   (Continuar leyendo…)

Despedida a Jtatic Samuel

With sorrow and an immense recognition we bade farewell to our dear Jtatic Samuel Ruiz García, who passed away on January 24, 2011. These are some of the moments of his farewell during the 38 hours in which his body remained in the cathedral of San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas, before being buried in the cathedral. To Don Samuel, our deepest feelings of gratitude for his work at the side of the original peoples, the poor and exploited. You remain with us, dear Tatic.

Victoria de los comerciantes del Mercado en San Cristóbal de las Casas

After a long struggle, the vendors at the traditional market in San Cristóbal de las Casas won the battle to stay at their place of work and sustainance. Among general joy, Narciso Ruiz Sántiz, president of the newly formed Association of Merchants of the Traditional Market of San Cristóbal de las Casas gave this press conference.
