May: Between Authoritarianism and Resistance

The geography?

Well, it could be any part of this country, scratched open and bleeding with forced disappearances, impunity made institution, intolerance as a form of government, corruption as the modus vivendi of a fetid and mediocre political class.

But it could also be any part of this country healed by the persistence of the families who do not forget their missing, their tenacious search for truth and justice, their rebellious resistance in the face of blows, bullets, and clubs, and their eagerness to construct a path without masters, bosses, saviors, guides, or caudillos; through defense, resistance, rebellion; through the strength of pain and rage making the crack deeper and wider.

“Mexico” as this country is commonly called, reflects in its own way the crisis that is shaking the entire world.

It seems that at some moment in the brief and intense history of the 20th century, this country was an international referent for tourism. One heard about its landscapes, its gastronomy, the hospitality of its people, the perfection of the perfect dictatorship.

But both before and during this travel agency pamphlet image, what happened happened. No, I won’t ply you with information on what has happened in the immediate past, say the last 30 years.

The thing is that over the past few years, “Mexico” has become a world referent for governmental corruption; for the cruelty of narco-trafficking; the full complicity and cohabitation, not merely infiltration, of organized crime and the official institutions; the forced disappearances; the army out of the barracks and into the streets and onto the highways; the murders and imprisonments of opposition figures, journalists, and others; the “warning” signs on the paths of tourists; the cynicism as idiosyncrasy in the media and social networks; and life, freedom, and personal possessions gambled in the deadly roulette of daily life (“if they didn’t come for you today, maybe tomorrow”). If you are a woman, of whatever age, multiply the risks. The feminine, along with any difference, is ahead only in this respect: more likely to suffer violence, disappearance, death.

El 7 de mayo de 2016, Maximiliano Gordillo Martínez, originario de la comunidad Tzinil, municipio de Socoltenango, Chiapas, se dirigía a Playa del Carmen en busca de trabajo. En el trayecto, entre las 9:30 y 10:30 pm, el transporte llegó a un puesto de revisión migratoria, probablemente en el estado de Tabasco. Agentes de migración bajaron a seis o siete personas que no llevaban credencial de elector, entre ellos a Maximiliano. Este último presentó acta de nacimiento y CURP, pero los agentes lo acusaron de presentar documentos falsos. Desde entonces, no se le volvió a ver.

Familiares y organiaciones de defensa a los derechos de los migrantes han agotado todas las vías para obtener información del Instituto Nacional de Migración (INM), que insiste que Maximiliano no se encuentra en el sistema nacional del INM y se ha rehusado a colaborar en su búsqueda.

A seguir, la denuncia y llamado de acción urgente de Voces Mesoamericanas, el Centro de Derechos Humanos Fray Bartolomé de Las Casas (Frayba) y La 72 Hogar Refugio para Personas Migrantes.

Eleven years ago, in an area known as El Barrio in East Harlem, New York, community residents of 15 immigrant families, all of them women of color, came together to seek dignified housing in their community. They were struggling against gentrification and displacement, and the abuses of a private landlord who was trying to force them out of their homes in order to attract wealthier tenants and transform the neighborhood they lived in and loved. These women had no previous organizing experience, but they listened to and supported each other, and in December 2004, they formed Movement for Justice in El Barrio (Movement).

Astonishingly, Movement now has 954 members in 95 building committees. Eighty percent of the members are women, and it is the women who are the driving force behind the organization. The membership consists of low-income tenants who are immigrants and people of color; many are also Indigenous. Forced by poverty to leave their beloved native countries, they have built a strong community in El Barrio, and are determined not to allow themselves to be displaced again. They understand clearly that their fight is against the neoliberal system represented by the abusive landlords, property speculators, multinational corporations, politicians and government institutions that seek to displace them from their much-loved community.

Desde nuestras trincheras de lucha, nosotrxs que conformamos El Espacio de Lucha Contra el Olvido y la Represión (ELCOR) y El Grupo de Trabajo No Estamos Todxs, denunciamos públicamente al Estado Mexicano corrupto y asesino, por la ola de represión con la que atenta contra la autonomía y la vida de los pueblos organizados en resistencia.

El mal gobierno, marioneta política del proyecto neoliberal, enajenado en sus tres niveles, no cesa en su intento de destruir todas aquellas semillas de rebeldía que florecen a lo largo y ancho del territorio mexicano, hostigando, atacando, destruyendo, asesinando, encarcelando y despojando a los pueblos organizados y en resistencia del Congreso Nacional Indígena, quienes luchan por defender el territorio, la madre tierra y a la vida misma. Los últimos días hemos sido testigos nuevamente de la vorágine de violencia con la que el mal gobierno se ensaña impunemente contra los y las compañerxs del Ejido de San Sebastián Bachajón, contra la Comunidad de San Isidro los Laureles y contra la comunidad e Cruztón municipio de Venustiano Carranza.

El pasado 8 de mayo, el paramilitar Carlos Jiménez Gómes, junto con sus dos hijos policías estatales, atacaron e hirieron de gravedad al compañero Esteban Jiménez Gómez y a su familia del Ejido de San Sebastián Bachajón,  adherentes a la Sexta Declaración de la Selva Lacandona,  los compañerxs  se encuentran defendiendo su tierra y territorio de los proyectos de muerte del mal gobierno, como es el Centro Integralmente Planificado Palenque, proyecto que pretende despojar a las comunidades de sus tierras para  hacer un desarrollo turístico.

En las tierras recuperadas desde el 20 de diciembre del 2015 por nuestrxs compañerxs de la comunidad de San Isidro los Laureles, municipio de Venustiano Carranza, integrantes del Congreso Nacional Indígena y del espacio de lucha de Semilla Digna, ya crece la milpa y la vida, ya se están por cosechar los frutos de la autonomía y la organización rompiendo con la esclavitud que deja la caña. Exigimos justicia para nuestrxs compañerxs que fueron desalojadxs violentamente de sus tierras el 12 de mayo por un grupo de guardias blancas liderados por Francisco Ruiz, Rodrigo Ruiz y Octovin Albores.

En la comunidad de Cruztón, Municipio de Venustiano Carranza, integrantes del espacio de lucha de Semilla Digna y el Congreso Nacional Indígena, fue retenido y torturado un compañero de la organización por el grupo Nuevo Guadalupe Victoria de la comunidad vecina de Guadalupe Victoria, esta nueva ola de agresiones contra Cruztón dio inicio el 21 de marzo pasado cuando dicho grupo les cerró el paso a su panteón, lugar sagrado para lxs compañerxs. Desde el año 2007 lxs compañerxs de Cruzton se organizaron para defender su tierra y con ello emprender la lucha por el cuidado de la madre tierra.

Nos pronunciamos también por Tila, Acteal y las comunidades que conforman Semilla Digna, adherentes a la sexta declaración de la Selva Lacandona e integrantes del CNI y les expresamos nuestra solidaridad con sus luchas y sus procesos organizativos.

Our peoples, tribes, communities, organizations, and neighborhoods see with rage and indignation how the bad government boasts its total lack of shame, through its political parties of every color, as it continues to attack our peoples and its political parties continue trying to divide our communities. Our voice will not tire of denouncing and shouting, Enough!

On May 14, brutally and shamelessly, the police and bodyguards of the PAN-PRD candidate Gloria Sánchez López dared to aim their murderous weapons at the dignified community of Álvaro Obregón, Juchitán, injuring the six compañeros who were in an assembly, defending their physical and political territory from deadly wind energy projects, whose “clean” energy is filthy with blood, corruption, and death. The candidates from all of the political parties—who even though they are only candidates feel they can already benefit from the impunity they are granted for belonging to the band of criminals badly governing the state of Oaxaca and the country—believe that with bullets they will manage to change the conscience and kill the dignity of the Binizza people.
