On Tuesday, August 28th, 2012, people gathered in Portland, Oregon to learn about the urgent situation in San Marcos Avil\u00e9s. We reviewed a history of the Zapatista movement since the uprising in 1994, and those who are more familiar with the movement shared information with those who were just learning for the first time.\u00a0 We then watched the video made by the companer@s in San Marcos Avil\u00e9s and people who had spent time as Human Rights Observers in Mexico (one of\u00a0 whom had been to San Marcos Avil\u00e9s) shared their stories and experiences.\u00a0 All were moved and send their wishes of safety and freedom to the comp@s of San Marcos Avil\u00e9s and all Zapatista communities.<\/p>\n
At the end of the presentation, we had an hour of questions, answers and discussions.\u00a0 The conversation ranged from the continued and inspiring struggle of the Zapatistas to the situations of Latino immigrants in the United States today to the horrendous drug war violence in northern Mexico.\u00a0 The discussion was so rich that we decided to organize another event, and will be gathering again in mid-October to learn more about the history of the Zapatistas and to share the story of San Marcos Avil\u00e9s with more people.<\/p>\n
