Abril del 2021.<\/p>\n

\u00bfCalendario?\u00a0 Una madrugada del cuarto mes.\u00a0 \u00bfGeograf\u00eda?\u00a0 Las monta\u00f1as del sureste mexicano.\u00a0 Un silencio repentino se impone a los grillos, al ladrido disperso y lejano de los perros, al eco de una m\u00fasica de marimba.\u00a0 Aqu\u00ed, en las entra\u00f1as de los cerros, un susurro m\u00e1s que un ronquido.\u00a0 Si no estuvi\u00e9ramos donde estamos, podr\u00eda pensarse que es un rumor de mar abierto.\u00a0 No las olas reventando contra la costa, la playa, el acantilado acotado con un tajo caprichoso.\u00a0 No, algo m\u00e1s.\u00a0 Y entonces\u2026 un largo quejido y un temblor intempestivo, breve.<\/p>\n

La monta\u00f1a se alza.\u00a0 Se arremanga, con pudor, un poco las naguas.\u00a0 No sin trabajos, arranca sus pies de la tierra.\u00a0 Da el primer paso con un gesto de dolor.\u00a0 Ahora le sangran las plantas a esta monta\u00f1a peque\u00f1a, lejana de los mapas, los destinos tur\u00edsticos y las cat\u00e1strofes.\u00a0 Pero aqu\u00ed todo es complicidad, as\u00ed que una lluvia anacr\u00f3nica le lava los pies y, con lodo, le cura las heridas.<\/p>\n

\u201cCu\u00eddate hija<\/em>\u201d, le dice la Ceiba madre.\u00a0 \u201c\u00c1nimo<\/em>\u201d, habla el huap\u00e1c como consigo mismo.\u00a0 El p\u00e1jaro tapacamino la gu\u00eda.\u00a0 \u201cAl oriente, amiga, al oriente<\/em>\u201d, dice mientras brinca de un lado a otro.<\/p>\n

Vestida de \u00e1rboles, aves y piedras, camina la monta\u00f1a.\u00a0 Y a su paso, se agarran a los bordes de su nagua, hombres, mujeres, quienes no son ni las unas ni los otros, ni\u00f1as y ni\u00f1os somnolientos.\u00a0 Van trepando por su blusa, coronan la punta de sus pechos, siguen a sus hombros y, ya sobre lo alto de su cabellera, despiertan.<\/p>\n

Al oriente el sol, apenas asomado al horizonte, detiene un poco su necia y cotidiana ronda.\u00a0 Le ha parecido ver que una monta\u00f1a, con una corona de seres humanos, camina.\u00a0 Pero m\u00e1s all\u00e1 del sol y de unas nubes grises que la noche dej\u00f3 olvidadas, nadie aqu\u00ed parece sorprenderse.<\/p>\n

\u201cDe por s\u00ed as\u00ed estaba escrito<\/em>\u201d, dice el Viejo Antonio mientras afila el machete de doble filo, y la Do\u00f1a Juanita asiente con un suspiro.<\/p>\n

En el fog\u00f3n huele a caf\u00e9 y a ma\u00edz cocido.\u00a0 En la radio comunitaria se escucha una cumbia.\u00a0 La letra habla de una leyenda imposible: una monta\u00f1a navegando a contrapelo de la historia.<\/p>\n

Siete personas, siete zapatistas, forman la fracci\u00f3n mar\u00edtima de la delegaci\u00f3n que visitar\u00e1 Europa.\u00a0 Cuatro son mujeres, dos son varones y\u00a0unoa<\/em>\u00a0es\u00a0otroa<\/em>.\u00a0 4, 2, 1.\u00a0 El escuadr\u00f3n 421 se encuentra ya acuartelado en el llamado \u201cCentro de Adiestramiento Mar\u00edtimo-Terrestre Zapatista\u201d, ubicado en el Semillero Comandanta Ramona de la zona Tzotz Choj.<\/p>\n

No fue f\u00e1cil.\u00a0 M\u00e1s bien, ha sido tortuoso.\u00a0 Para llegar a este calendario, hubimos de enfrentar reparos, consejos, desalientos, llamados a la mesura y a la prudencia, francos sabotajes, mentiras, malhabladas, recuentos detallados de las dificultades, chismes e insolencias, y una frase repetida hasta el asco: \u201ceso que quieren hacer es muy dif\u00edcil, por no decir imposible\u201d\u00a0 Y, claro, dici\u00e9ndonos, orden\u00e1ndonos, lo que deb\u00edamos y no hacer.\u00a0 Todo eso, en este y el otro lado del oc\u00e9ano.<\/p>\n

Claro, todo eso sin contar los obst\u00e1culos del supremo gobierno y su burocracia ignorante, necia y racista.<\/p>\n

Pero de todo eso ya les platicar\u00e9 en otra ocasi\u00f3n.\u00a0 Ahora debo contarles un poco de nuestra flamante delegaci\u00f3n zapatista mar\u00edtima.<\/p>\n

Las 4 mujeres, los dos varones y loa\u00a0otroa<\/em>\u00a0son seres humanos.\u00a0 Se les aplic\u00f3 el Test de Turing, con algunas modificaciones que consider\u00e9 pertinentes, para descartar que alg\u00fan@ de ell@s, o tod@s, fueran un organismo cibern\u00e9tico, un robot pues, capaz de bailar la cumbia del Sapito equivocando el paso.\u00a0 Ergo, los 7 seres pertenecen a la raza humana.<\/p>\n

Los 7 son nacidos en el continente que llaman \u201cAm\u00e9rica\u201d, y el hecho de que compartan dolores y rabias con otros pueblos originarios de este lado del oc\u00e9ano, los hace Latinoamericanos.\u00a0 Son, tambi\u00e9n, mexicanos de nacimiento, descendientes de los pueblos originarios mayas, seg\u00fan se constat\u00f3 con sus familias, vecinos y conocidos.\u00a0 Son tambi\u00e9n zapatistas, con documentos de los municipios aut\u00f3nomos y las Juntas de Buen Gobierno que as\u00ed lo avalan.\u00a0 No tienen delitos que se les hayan demostrado y que no hayan sido sancionados en su oportunidad.\u00a0 Viven, trabajan, enferman, se curan, aman, desaman, r\u00eden, lloran, recuerdan, olvidan, juegan, se ponen seri@s, toman apunte, buscan pretexto, en suma, viven en las monta\u00f1as del Sureste Mexicano, en Chiapas, M\u00e9xico, Latinoam\u00e9rica, Am\u00e9rica, Planeta Tierra, etc\u00e9tera.<\/p>\n

L@s 7, adem\u00e1s, se ofrecieron de voluntari@s para hacer la traves\u00eda por mar -algo que no provoca mucho entusiasmo en la vasta variedad de zapatistas de todas las edades-.\u00a0 O sea que, para ponerlo en claro, nadie quer\u00eda viajar en barco.\u00a0 \u00bfQu\u00e9 tanto contribuy\u00f3 a eso la campa\u00f1a de terror desatada por Esperanza y toda la banda de Defensa Zapatista, que se sintetiza en el c\u00e9lebre algoritmo de \u201ctod@s van a morir miserablemente\u201d?\u00a0 No lo s\u00e9.\u00a0 Pero el hecho de haber derrotado a las redes sociales,\u00a0whatsapp<\/em>\u00a0incluido, sin ninguna ventaja tecnol\u00f3gica (vaya, sin siquiera se\u00f1al rural de celular), me motiv\u00f3 a poner mi granito de arena de playa.<\/p>\n

As\u00ed que, movido por mi simpat\u00eda por la banda de Defensa Zapatista, ped\u00ed permiso con el SubMoy para hablarle a la delegaci\u00f3n que, entre gritos, chillidos y risas de ni\u00f1@s, se preparaba para la invasi\u00f3n que no es invasi\u00f3n\u2026 bueno, s\u00ed es, pero es algo, digamos, consensuado.\u00a0 Algo as\u00ed como un internacionalismo sado-masoquista que, por supuesto, no ser\u00e1 bien visto por la ortodoxia hecha vanguardia, la cual, como se debe, va tan delante de las masas, que no se alcanza a ver.<\/p>\n

Me present\u00e9 en la asamblea y, poniendo mi mejor cara de tragedia, les cont\u00e9 cosas horribles de altamar: los \u201cg\u00f3mitos<\/em><\/strong>\u201d interminables; la mon\u00f3tona vastedad del horizonte; la alimentaci\u00f3n pobre en ma\u00edz, sin palomitas y -\u00a1horror!- sin salsa Valentina; el encierro con otras personas por varias semanas \u2013con las que, las primeras horas, intercambias sonrisas y atenciones, y un poco despu\u00e9s miradas que matan-; describ\u00ed tambi\u00e9n, con lujo de detalles, tormentas terribles y amenazas desconocidas; me refer\u00ed al\u00a0Kraken<\/em>\u00a0y, por uno de esos resabios literarios, les habl\u00e9 de una gigantesca ballena blanca que buscaba, furiosa, a quien arrancarle la pierna, lo que anular\u00eda a la v\u00edctima de un papel decoroso en la cumbia m\u00e1s lenta.\u00a0 Fue in\u00fatil.\u00a0 Y debo confesarles, no sin mi orgullo de g\u00e9nero mal herido, que fueron mujeres las m\u00e1s que dijeron: \u201cen barco\u201d, cuando se les presentaba la opci\u00f3n de viaje por mar o viaje por aire.<\/p>\n

As\u00ed que se anotaron no 7, ni 10, ni 15, sino m\u00e1s de 20.\u00a0 Hasta la peque\u00f1a Ver\u00f3nica, de 3 a\u00f1os, se apunt\u00f3 cuando escuch\u00f3 la historia de la ballena asesina.\u00a0 S\u00ed, incomprensible.\u00a0 Pero ya que la conozcan (a la ni\u00f1a, no a la ballena), la compadecer\u00e1n.\u00a0 Quiero decir, compadecer\u00e1n a Moby Dick.<\/p>\n

Entonces, \u00bfpor qu\u00e9 s\u00f3lo 7?\u00a0 Bueno, les puedo hablar de los 7 puntos cardinales (el frente, el tras, el un lado, el otro lado, el centro, el arriba y el abajo), de los 7 dioses primeros, los que nacieron el mundo, y as\u00ed.\u00a0 Pero la verdad es que, lejos de s\u00edmbolos y alegor\u00edas, la cantidad se debe a que la mayor\u00eda no ha conseguido a\u00fan el pasaporte, y todav\u00eda se est\u00e1 batallando para conseguirlo.\u00a0 Ya les contar\u00e9 de eso despu\u00e9s.<\/p>\n

En cuanto ponga sus dos pies sobre el territorio europeo y se recupere del mareo,\u00a0Marijose<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0gritar\u00e1:<\/p>\n

\u201c\u00a1R\u00edndanse cara p\u00e1lidas hetero patriarcales que persiguen lo diferente!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Nah, es broma.\u00a0 Pero, \u00bfa poco no estar\u00eda bien que dijera eso?<\/p>\n

No, al pisar tierra,\u00a0loa<\/em>\u00a0compa zapatista,\u00a0Marijose<\/em><\/strong>, dir\u00e1, con voz solemne:<\/p>\n

\u201cA nombre de las mujeres, ni\u00f1os, hombres, ancianos y, claro, otroas zapatistas, declaro que el nombre de esta tierra, a la que sus naturales llaman ahora \u201cEuropa\u201d, de aqu\u00ed en adelante se llamar\u00e1:\u00a0SLUMIL K\u00b4AJXEMK\u00b4OP<\/strong>, que quiere decir \u201cTierra Insumisa\u201d, o \u201cTierra que no se resigna, que no desmaya\u201d.\u00a0 Y as\u00ed ser\u00e1 conocida por propios y extra\u00f1os mientras haya aqu\u00ed alguien que no se rinda, que no se venda y que no claudique\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n

The calendar? An early morning in April. Geography? The mountains of the Mexican Southeast. A sudden silence overtakes the crickets, the distant barking of dogs, and the echo of marimba music. Here, in the belly of the mountains, it sounds more like a whisper than a shout. If we weren\u2019t where we are, you might think it was the murmur of the open ocean. But it\u2019s not the sound of waves crashing against the coast, the beach, or the cliff edge marked by a sheer drop. No, it\u2019s something more than that. And then\u2026 a long wail and a sudden, brief tremor.<\/p>\n

The mountain gets up, shyly lifting its skirts a bit and, not without some difficulty, pulls its feet out of the earth. It takes a first step, grimacing in pain. Far from maps, tourist destinations and catastrophes, the soles of the small mountain\u2019s feet are bleeding. But here all are in on the plan, so an unexpected rain falls to wash its feet and cure its wounds.<\/p>\n

\u201cTake care, daughter,<\/em>\u201d says the mother Ceiba tree. \u201cYou can do it!<\/em>\u201d says the Huap\u00e1c tree, as if to itself. The paraque bird leads the way. \u201cGo east, friend, go east,<\/em>\u201d it says as it hops from side to side. Clothed in trees, birds, and stones, the mountain walks, and with each step, sleepy men, women, persons who are neither men nor women, and boys and girls grab onto her skirts. They climb up her blouse, crown the tip of her breasts, continue up her shoulders, and, when they have reached the top of her head, they awaken.<\/p>\n

To the east, the sun, just edging above the horizon, slows its stubborn daily rise. It\u2019s quite a sight to see a mountain, with a crown of humans, walking along. But besides the sun and a few gray clouds that the night left behind, no one here seems surprised.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo it was written<\/em>,\u201d says Old Man Antonio as he sharpens his double-edged machete, and Do\u00f1a Juanita nods and sighs. The fire smells like coffee and cooked corn. A cumbia is playing on the community radio. The lyrics speak of an impossible legend: a mountain traversing history against the grain.<\/p>\n

Seven people, seven Zapatistas, will make up the maritime division of our delegation to Europe. Four men, two women, and one other<\/em> (unoa otroa<\/em>). 4, 2, 1. The 421st Squadron is already stationed at the \u201cZapatistas Maritime-Land Training Center\u201d located in the Comandanta Ramona Seedbed in the Tzotz Choj zone.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t easy\u2014it\u2019s been torturous, actually. To get to this point we\u2019ve had to face criticisms, advice, discouragement, calls for caution and moderation, open sabotage, lies, badmouthing, detailed sermons on the problems at hand, gossip, insolence, and a phrase repeated ad nauseum: \u201cWhat you all are trying to do is very difficult, if not impossible<\/em>.\u201d All of this of course in addition to being ordered around and told what we should and should not do. All this from both sides of the ocean.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s on top of the obstacles created by the supreme government and its ignorant, pig-headed, racist bureaucracy, of course, but I\u2019ll tell you about all that another time. Right now I have to tell you about our splendid Zapatista maritime delegation.<\/p>\n

The four women, two men and one other<\/em> are human beings. They were given the Turing Test, with a few modifications I considered pertinent, to discard the possibility that any of them, or all of them, might be a cybernetic organism, a robot that is, capable of dancing the cumbia del Sapito[i]<\/strong><\/a><\/em> with a few missteps. Therefore, the seven of them belong to the human race.<\/p>\n

All seven of them were born on the continent called \u201cAmerica\u201d and the fact that they share pain and rage with other originary peoples from this side of the ocean makes them Latin Americans. They are also Mexicans, descended from originary Mayan peoples, as confirmed by their families, neighbors and acquaintances. They are also Zapatistas, with documents from the autonomous municipalities and the Good Government Councils that show as much. They have not been shown to have committed any crimes that were not appropriately punished. They live, work, get sick, get well, fall in love, fall out of love, laugh, cry, remember, forget, play, get serious, take notes, make up excuses\u2014that is, they live, in the mountains of Southeastern Mexico, in Chiapas, Mexico, Latin America, America, Planet Earth, etcetera.<\/p>\n

In addition, the seven of them volunteered to make the trip by sea \u2013 something that doesn\u2019t inspire much enthusiasm among Zapatistas of any age. To be frank, nobody wanted to travel by boat. How much of that is due to Esperanza and the whole Defensa Zapatista gang\u2019s campaign of fear, which can be summarized in their catchy formulation, \u201cyou\u2019re all going to die horribly<\/em>,\u201d I can\u2019t say. But the fact of having defeated social media, including whatsapp, despite having no technological advantage (hell, without even a rural cellphone signal) motivated me to add my two cents to the conversation.<\/p>\n

So, moved by my sympathy for the Defensa Zapatista gang, I asked SubMoy for permission to speak to the delegation, which, amidst the shouts, cries and laughter of children, was preparing for the invasion that\u2019s not an invasion\u2026 Well, it is, but you could call it consensual; something like an internationalist sado-masochism that, of course, will not meet with the approval of the orthodoxy-cum-vanguard, which, as usual, is so far ahead of the masses that you can\u2019t see them.<\/p>\n

I introduced myself to the assembly and, putting on my best tragic face, I told them horrible things about the high seas: the interminable vomiting; the vast monotony of the horizon; the corn-poor diet, with no popcorn or (the horror!) Valentina salsa; the fact of being shut in with other people for several weeks (with whom, for the first few hours, you exchange smiles and pleasantries, and later on, looks that kill). I also described, in extreme detail, terrible storms and unknown threats. I referred to the Kraken and, in a moment of literary vice, I spoke of a giant white whale on a furious search for a leg to rip off of someone, which would of course exclude the victim from a respectable role in even the slowest cumbia. It was useless. I must confess, not without hurting my masculine pride, that it was primarily women who said, \u201cby boat,\u201d when presented with the options of traveling by sea or by air.<\/p>\n

And so it was that not 7, not 10, not 15 but more than 20 people signed up. Even little Veronica, age 3, signed up when she heard the story of the murderous whale. Incomprehensible, I know. But once you meet her (the girl, not the whale), you\u2019ll sympathize\u2014with Moby Dick, I mean.<\/p>\n

Why only 7, then? Well, I could talk about the 7 cardinal directions (forward, backward, to one side, to the other side, the center, up and down), of the first 7 gods who gave birth to the world, and so on. But the truth is that far from symbols and allegories, the number of people is due to the fact that the majority still does not have their passports and are still battling to get them. I\u2019ll tell you about that later.<\/p>\n

But I\u2019m sure you\u2019re not interested in those problems. What you want to know is who is going to set sail on \u201cLa Monta\u00f1a<\/em>\u201d [The Mountain], cross the Atlantic Ocean and invade\u2026 err<\/em>, I mean, visit Europe. So below find their photos and a brief description:<\/p>\n

Lupita<\/strong><\/em>, 19-years-old, Mexican, Tzotzil, from the Chiapas highlands, speaks both her native language, Tzotzil, and Spanish fluently, knows how to read and write, and has been a local youth coordinator, regional youth coordinator, and local administrator of collective work. Lupita likes to listen to pop music, love songs, cumbia, ballads, electronic music, rap, hip-hop, Andean music, Chinese music, revolutionary music, classic rock, 80\u2019s rock (or so they call it), mariachis, traditional music from her village\u2026 and reguet\u00f3n <\/em>(Editor\u2019s note: if that isn\u2019t \u201ca world where many worlds fit,\u201d then I don\u2019t know what is. End note). Lupita\u2019s favorite colors are black, red, maroon, and brown, and has had previous maritime experience when she traveled by boat as a young girl. She spent six months preparing to be a delegate and volunteer for the voyage to Europe and will work as a Tercia Compa<\/em> [Zapatista media] during the journey across the sea.<\/p>\n

She is a single mother raising a 6-year-old girl with support from her mom. She has been a coordinator of \u201cThe Women that We Are\u201d collective and has taken classes on veterinary medicine. Carolina is currently a Comandanta <\/em>in the Zapatista political-organizational leadership. She likes pop music, love songs, cumbia, 80\u2019s rock (or so they call it), grupero<\/em> and revolutionary music, and likes the colors cream, black, and maroon. As for her previous maritime experience, she has been on a single boat ride. She spent six months preparing to be a delegate and volunteer for the voyage to Europe.<\/p>\n

She likes to listen to love songs, Grupero<\/em> music, cumbia, vallenato, revolutionary music, tropical, pop, marimba, rancheras, and 80\u2019s rock (or so they call it) and likes the colors black, brown, and red. She has never travelled by boat and has spent six months preparing to be a delegate and volunteer for the voyage to Europe.<\/p>\n

He likes to listen to rancheras, cumbia, huichol music, marimba and revolutionary music, and his favorite colors are blue, black, grey, and brown. His previous maritime travel experience includes being on a fishing boat and a motorized boat. He spent six months preparing to be a delegate and volunteer for the voyage to Europe.<\/p>\n

Marijose spent six months preparing to be a delegate and volunteer for the voyage to Europe and has been designated to be the first Zapatista to get off the boat, which will initiate the invasion\u2026 okay, the visit to Europe.<\/p>\n

Thus, our first footstep on European soil (assuming of course they even let us disembark) will not be that of a man, nor that of a woman, but that of an other <\/em>[otroa<\/em>]. In what the late SupMarcos would have called a \u201cslap in the face of the hetero-patriarchal left,\u201d it has been decided that the first person to disembark will be Marijose<\/em><\/strong>. Upon stepping for the first time on European soil and recovering from seasickness, Marijose<\/em><\/strong> will shout:<\/p>\n

\u201cSurrender hetero-patriarchal pale-faces who persecute those who are different!<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

Nah, just kidding, but that would be cool wouldn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n

Rather, upon landing, the Zapatista compa Marijose<\/strong><\/em> will solemnly say:<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the name of the Zapatista women, children, men, elderly, and of course, <\/em>others, I declare that from now on this place, currently referred to as \u201cEurope\u201d by those who live here, be called: <\/em>SLUMIL<\/strong> K\u00b4AJXEMK\u00b4OP<\/strong>, which means \u201cRebellious Land\u201d or \u201cLand which does not give in nor give up.\u201d And that is how it will be known by its own people and by others for as long as there is at least someone here who does not surrender, sell out, or give up.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
