Segunda Parte: LA CANTINA.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00bfCalendario?\u00a0 El actual.\u00a0 \u00bfGeograf\u00eda?\u00a0 Cualquier rinc\u00f3n del mundo.<\/p>\n

Usted no sabe bien a bien por qu\u00e9, pero camina de la mano de una ni\u00f1a.\u00a0 Est\u00e1 a punto de preguntarle a d\u00f3nde se dirigen, cuando pasan frente a una gran cantina.\u00a0 Un gran letrero luminoso, como la marquesina de un cine, declara: \u201cLA HISTORIA CON MAY\u00daSCULAS. Cantina-bar\u201d, y m\u00e1s abajo \u201cNo se admiten mujeres, infantes, ind\u00edgenas, desempleados, otroas<\/em>, ancian@s, migrantes y dem\u00e1s desechables\u201d.\u00a0 Alguna mano blanca ha agregado \u201cIn this place, Black Lives does not matter<\/em>\u201d.\u00a0 Y otra mano varonil sum\u00f3: \u201cMujeres pueden entrar si se comportan como hombres<\/em>\u201d.\u00a0 A los lados del establecimiento, se amontonan cad\u00e1veres de mujeres de todas las edades y, a juzgar por las ropas hechas jirones, de todas las clases sociales.\u00a0 Usted se detiene y, resignada, la ni\u00f1a tambi\u00e9n.\u00a0 Se asoman por la puerta y ven un desorden de hombres y mujeres con modos masculinos.\u00a0 Sobre la barra o mostrador, un var\u00f3n esgrime un bate de b\u00e9isbol y con \u00e9l amenaza a diestra y siniestra.\u00a0 La muchedumbre est\u00e1 claramente dividida: en un lado quienes aplauden y en el otro quienes abuchean.\u00a0 Todos est\u00e1n como embriagados: la mirada furiosa, la baba escurri\u00e9ndoles por la barbilla, el rostro enrojecido.<\/p>\n

Se acerca a usted quien debe ser el portero o algo as\u00ed y le pregunta:<\/p>\n

\u201c\u00bfQuiere pasar?\u00a0 Puede elegir el bando que guste.\u00a0 \u00bfQuiere aplaudir o criticar?\u00a0 No importa cu\u00e1l elija, le garantizamos que tendr\u00e1 muchos seguidores, likes, pulgares arriba y m\u00e1s aplausos.\u00a0 Usted ser\u00e1 famoso si se le ocurre algo ingenioso, sea a favor o en contra.\u00a0 Y aunque no sea muy inteligente, basta con que haga ruido.\u00a0 Tampoco importa si es cierto o falso lo que grite, siempre y cuando grite fuerte<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n

Usted valora la oferta.\u00a0 Le suena atractiva, sobre todo ahora que a usted no le sigue ni el perro.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u00bfEs peligroso?<\/em>\u201d, aventura usted con timidez.<\/p>\n

El cadenero lo tranquiliza: \u201cDe ninguna manera, aqu\u00ed reina la impunidad.\u00a0 Vea usted a quien est\u00e1 en turno al bate.\u00a0 Dice cualquier tonter\u00eda y unos le aplauden y otros lo critican con otras tonter\u00edas.\u00a0 Cuando esa persona termine su turno, otra subir\u00e1.\u00a0 Ya le dije antes que no necesita ser inteligente.\u00a0 Es m\u00e1s, la inteligencia aqu\u00ed es un estorbo.\u00a0 An\u00edmese.\u00a0 As\u00ed se olvida de las enfermedades, de las cat\u00e1strofes, de las miserias, de las mentiras hechas gobierno, del ma\u00f1ana.\u00a0 Aqu\u00ed la realidad no importa en realidad.\u00a0 Lo que vale es la moda en turno<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n

Usted: \u201c\u00bfY de qu\u00e9 discuten?<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cAh, de cualquier cosa.\u00a0 Ambos lados se empe\u00f1an en frivolidades y estupideces.\u00a0 Como que la creatividad no es lo suyo. \u00a0Y as\u00ed.<\/em>\u201d, responde el guardia mientras ojea, temeroso, a lo alto de la edificaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n

La ni\u00f1a sigue la direcci\u00f3n de la mirada y, se\u00f1alando a lo m\u00e1s alto del edificio, donde se alcanza a ver un piso completo -todo vidrio espejo-, pregunta:<\/p>\n

\u201c\u00bfY \u00e9sos de all\u00e1 arriba est\u00e1n a favor o en contra?<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAh, no\u201d<\/em>, responde el hombre y agrega en un susurro: \u201c\u00c9sos son los due\u00f1os de la cantina.\u00a0 No necesitan manifestarse por nada, simplemente se hace lo que ellos mandan<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n

Afuera, m\u00e1s all\u00e1 en el camino, se mira un grupo de personas que, supone usted, no tuvo inter\u00e9s en entrar a la cantina y sigui\u00f3 su camino.\u00a0 Otro tanto sale del establecimiento con molestia, murmurando: \u201ces imposible razonar ah\u00ed dentro<\/em>\u201d y \u201cen lugar de \u201cLa Historia\u201d, deber\u00eda llamarse \u201cLa Histeria\u201d<\/em>\u201d.\u00a0 R\u00eden, se alejan.<\/p>\n

La ni\u00f1a se le queda mirando.\u00a0 Usted duda\u2026<\/p>\n

Ella le dice: \u201cPuedes quedar o seguir.\u00a0 S\u00f3lo hazte responsable de tu decisi\u00f3n.\u00a0 La libertad no es s\u00f3lo poder decidir qu\u00e9 hacer y hacerlo.\u00a0 Es tambi\u00e9n hacerse responsable de lo que se hace y de la decisi\u00f3n tomada<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n

Sin decidirse a\u00fan, usted le pregunta a la ni\u00f1a: \u201c\u00bfY t\u00fa a d\u00f3nde vas?<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA mi pueblo<\/em>\u201d, dice la ni\u00f1a, y extiende sus manitas al horizonte como diciendo \u201cal mundo<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n

\nEs M\u00e9xico, es 2020, es diciembre, es madrugada, hace fr\u00edo y una luna llena mira, asombrada, c\u00f3mo las monta\u00f1as se incorporan, se arremangan un poco las naguas y despacio, muy despacio, se echan a andar.<\/p>\n

Del Cuaderno de Apuntes del Gato-Perro: Esperanza le cuenta a Defensa un sue\u00f1o que tuvo.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cDe ah\u00ed que estoy dormida y estoy so\u00f1ando.\u00a0 Claro lo s\u00e9 que estoy so\u00f1ando porque estoy dormida.\u00a0 Entonces, de ah\u00ed que lo miro que estoy muy lejos.\u00a0 Que hay hombres y mujeres y otroas muy otros.\u00a0 Que sea que no los conozco.\u00a0 Que sea que hablan una lengua que no entiendo.\u00a0 Y tienen muchos colores y modos muy distintos.\u00a0 Hacen mucha bulla.\u00a0 Cantan y bailan, hablan, discuten, lloran, r\u00eden.\u00a0 Y no conozco nada de lo que miro.\u00a0 Hay construcciones grandes y peque\u00f1as.\u00a0 Hay \u00e1rboles y plantas como los de ac\u00e1, pero diferentes. \u00a0Muy otra la comida.\u00a0 O sea que todo muy raro.\u00a0 Pero lo m\u00e1s extra\u00f1o es que, no s\u00e9 por qu\u00e9 ni c\u00f3mo, pero lo s\u00e9 que estoy en mi casa<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n

Esperanza queda en silencio.\u00a0 Defensa Zapatista termina de tomar apunte en un su cuaderno, se le queda mirando y, despu\u00e9s de unos segundos, le pregunta:<\/p>\n

\u201c\u00bfSabes nadar?\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n

Doy fe.
\nGuau-Miau.<\/p>\n

Part Two: The Tavern<\/strong><\/p>\n

The calendar? Now. The geography? Any corner of the world.<\/p>\n

You don\u2019t quite know why, but you are walking hand in hand with a little girl. You are about to ask her where you are going when you pass in front of a huge tavern. It has a large illuminated sign like a movie theater marquee that reads: \u201cHistory with a capital \u2018H\u2019: Caf\u00e9-bar\u201d and below that, \u201cNo women, children, indigenous people, unemployed, people of other genders [otroas<\/em>], elderly persons, migrants, or other useless people allowed.\u201d A white hand has added: \u201cIn this place, Black Lives do not matter[i]<\/strong><\/a>.<\/em>\u201d A male hand has scrawled, \u201cWomen allowed if they act like men.<\/em>\u201d Outside the doors of the establishment are heaped cadavers of women of all ages and, judging by their tattered clothes, of all social classes, too. You and the little girl pause, resigned. You peek in the door and see a commotion of men and women, all with masculine mannerisms. A man is standing on the bar with a baseball bat, swinging it threateningly in all directions. The crowd inside is clearly divided: one side is applauding while the other side boos. All of them are drunk, flushed, with furious gazes and drool dripping down their chins.<\/p>\n

A man whom you presume is the doorman approaches you and asks:<\/p>\n

\u201cYou want to come in? You can choose whichever side you like. You want to cheer or boo? It doesn\u2019t matter which you choose, we guarantee you\u2019ll get a lot of followers, likes, thumbs up and applause. You\u2019ll become famous if you come up with something clever, whether in favor or against. And even if you\u2019re not very smart, all you have to do is be loud. It doesn\u2019t matter whether what you say is true or false as long as you make a lot of noise.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

You consider the offer. It sounds attractive, especially now that no one follows you, not even a dog.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs it dangerous?<\/em>\u201d you ask timidly.<\/p>\n

The bouncer reassures you: \u201cNot at all, here impunity reigns. Look at the guy who\u2019s up to bat. He says whatever stupid thing and some people applaud him while others criticize him with further idiocies. When he finishes, someone else will take their turn. I already told you that you don\u2019t have to be smart. In fact, here intelligence is an obstacle. Come on in! This is how you forget about all the illnesses, the catastrophes, the misery, the government\u2019s lies, and tomorrow itself. Here, reality doesn\u2019t really matter. What matters is whatever is trendy today.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

You ask: \u201cAnd what are they debating?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cOh, any old thing. Both sides are focused on frivolities and superficialities. Creativity\u2019s not their thing, if you know what I mean<\/em>,\u201d the bouncer responds as he shoots a fearful glance toward the top of the building.<\/p>\n

The girl follows his gaze and points at the top of the building, where you can see a whole floor made of mirrored glass. \u201cAnd those people up there, are they for or against?\u201d<\/em>\u00a0she asks.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh no<\/em>,\u201d responds the man, and adds in a whisper, \u201cThose are the bar owners. They don\u2019t have to show their faces at all, everyone simply obeys them.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Outside, further down the path, you see a group of people who, you assume, were not interested in entering the tavern and continued on their way. Another group leaves the establishment with obvious annoyance, murmuring, \u201cIt\u2019s impossible to make any sense in there<\/em>,\u201d and \u201cInstead of \u2018History\u2019 it should be called \u2018Hysteria<\/em>.\u2019\u201d They laugh as they walk away.<\/p>\n

The girl glances at you. You hesitate\u2026<\/p>\n

She tells you,\u00a0\u201cYou can stay here or continue on. Just take responsibility for your decision. Freedom isn\u2019t just the ability to decide what to do and do it. It\u2019s also taking responsibility for what you do and for the decisions you make.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Still undecided, you ask the girl,\u00a0\u201cAnd you, where are you going?\u201d
\n<\/em>\u201cHome, to my town,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0she says, extending her little hands towards the horizon as if to say, \u201cto the world<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the mountains of the Mexican Southeast<\/p>\n

It\u2019s Mexico, 2020, December, hours before daybreak. It\u2019s cold and the full moon is watching with surprise as the mountains pull themselves together, pick up their\u00a0naguas<\/em>[ii]<\/a>\u00a0and slowly, very slowly, begin to walk.<\/p>\n

From the Notebook of the Cat-Dog: Esperanza tells Defensa about her dream<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cSo I\u2019m asleep and I\u2019m dreaming. I know for sure I\u2019m dreaming because I\u2019m asleep. And I see that I\u2019m very far away. There are women and men and others [<\/em>otroas] who are very other. That is, I don\u2019t know them. They\u2019re speaking a language I don\u2019t know. They are of many colors and have different customs and they\u2019re making quite the racket. They sing and dance, they talk, they argue, they cry and laugh. And nothing I\u2019m seeing is familiar. There are buildings big and small. There are trees and plants similar to the ones that grow here, but different. The food is very other. I mean, everything is very weird. But the strangest thing is that I don\u2019t know why or how, but I know that I\u2019m at home.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Esperanza waits in silence. Defensa Zapatista finishes taking notes in her notebook, stares at Esperanza for a few seconds and then asks her, \u201cDo you know how to swim?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
