El papel ecol\u00f3gico que juegan estos ecosistemas es fundamental para el equilibro planetario y por lo tanto son territorios clave para disminuir los impactos de los cambios globales, incluido el cambio clim\u00e1tico. Entre otras muchas funciones, son grandes reservorios de agua dulce y permiten fijar cantidades de CO<sub>2<\/sub> muy superiores a las de otros lugares. En definitiva, evitar la desaparici\u00f3n de las regiones m\u00e1s biodiversas del planeta es esencial para que la especie humana pueda aspirar a un futuro sostenible. Adem\u00e1s, el derecho de las diversas formas de existencia y la libre determinaci\u00f3n de los pueblos que habitan y cuidan estas selvas desde hace miles de a\u00f1os no es negociable. No podemos permitir que las ansias de enriquecimiento de una minor\u00eda privilegiada y las demandas excesivas de materiales de la sociedad industrial sirvan de excusa para acabar con un patrimonio tan valioso. El agotamiento de los recursos no se soluciona extrayendo m\u00e1s hasta esquilmar todo el planeta, sino consumiendo menos y reciclando los materiales que ya se han utilizado.<\/p>\n<p>En esta ocasi\u00f3n se trata de la selva de los Chimalapas ubicada en el sur de M\u00e9xico (istmo de Tehuantepec, Oaxaca) que est\u00e1 amenazada entre otras cosas, por megaproyectos mineros a cielo abierto. Estas actividades extractivas generar\u00edan enormes impactos ambientales en uno de los lugares de mayor biodiversidad del planeta, alterando miles de hect\u00e1reas de selva y contaminando las importantes masas de agua dulce que existen en este territorio que alcanza\u00a0 594.000 hect\u00e1reas de propiedad comunal.<\/p>\n<p>Atendiendo a esta realidad, demandamos a Andr\u00e9s Manuel L\u00f3pez Obrador, Presidente de M\u00e9xico:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Que la Secretar\u00eda de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales del Gobierno de M\u00e9xico niegue definitivamente el permiso de exploraci\u00f3n para el megaproyecto minero denominado \u201cSanta Marta\u201d, promovido por la empresa canadiense Minaurum Gold Coper.<\/li>\n<li>Que la Secretar\u00eda de Econom\u00eda del Gobierno de M\u00e9xico no otorgue las cuatro solicitudes de concesiones mineras que se encuentran en tramite, cuya superficie abarca aproximadamente 107.383,63 hect\u00e1reas (aunque afectar\u00eda a mucho m\u00e1s territorio) de d\u00f3nde pretenden extraer oro (Au), plata (Ag), cobre (Cu) y plomo (Pb).<\/li>\n<li>Que el Gobierno de M\u00e9xico junto con los organismos internacionales respeten y reconozcan los derechos inalienables de propiedad comunal del territorio (incluyendo el subsuelo) por parte de los pueblos ind\u00edgenas zoques (<em>Angp\u00f8n<\/em>) que habitan y cuidan la selva de Los Chimalapas desde hace milenios.<\/li>\n<li>Que el Gobierno de M\u00e9xico junto con los organismos internacionales articulen las medidas necesarias para el reconocimiento de los valores ecol\u00f3gicos y bioculturales de este territorio, y para su protecci\u00f3n efectiva asegurando as\u00ed la vida del pueblo ind\u00edgena zoque de Chimalapas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Expresamos de este modo nuestro apoyo y nuestra solidaridad internacional con la defensa del territorio del pueblo zoque, porque salvar la selva de Los Chimalapas es dar un paso m\u00e1s en la defensa del planeta, la vida y la humanidad.<\/p>\n<p>Para firmar (antes del 7 de Septiembre) rellenar el siguiente formulario <a href=\"https:\/\/forms.gle\/rB8DTBQMqH5onHx56\">https:\/\/forms.gle\/rB8DTBQMqH5onHx56<\/a> o enviar un correo electr\u00f3nico a <a href=\"mailto:selvachimalapas@gmail.com\">selvachimalapas@gmail.com<\/a> incluyendo los siguientes datos: personal acad\u00e9mico o investigador (nombre y apellidos, pa\u00eds, instituci\u00f3n a la que pertenecen, y\/o grupos de investigaci\u00f3n), profesionales (nombre y apellidos, pa\u00eds, profesi\u00f3n, instituci\u00f3n\/empresa), ecologistas, defensoras y defensores del territorio (nombre y apellidos, pa\u00eds, y organizaci\u00f3n o pueblo). Organizaciones y colectivos (nombre, siglas y pa\u00eds).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>[:en]In times of environmental and climatic emergency, the defense of the world\u2019s rainforests becomes a global responsibility. The ecological role of these ecosystems is fundamental for the planetary balance and\u00a0 key to diminish the impacts of global changes, including climate change. Among many other functions, rainforests are large reservoirs of fresh water, as well as they can fix higher quantities of CO<sub>2<\/sub> in comparison to other territories. It is clear that preventing the disappearance of these megabiodiverse regions of the planet is essential for a sustainable future. Moreover, the right to a different form of existence and the self-determination of the indigenous people who have inhabited and cared for these rainforests for thousands of years, cannot be negotiated. We cannot allow that the limitless desire for enrichment of a privileged minority and the excessive demands of materials on the industrial society to serve as excuses to destroy such a valuable heritage. The depletion of resources is not solved by extracting more until the whole planet is exhausted, but by consuming less and recycling the materials that have already been used.<\/p>\n<p>On this occasion, it is the Chimalapas rainforest located in southern Mexico (Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Oaxaca) that is threatened by, among other things, open-pit mining mega-projects. These extractive activities would generate enormous environmental impacts in one of the places with the greatest biodiversity on the planet, altering thousands of hectares of rainforest and contaminating the important bodies of fresh water that exist in this territory that reaches 594,000 hectares of communal property.<\/p>\n<p>In response to this reality, we demand to Andr\u00e9s Manuel L\u00f3pez Obrador, President of Mexico:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>That the Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources of the Mexican Government definitively deny the exploration permit for the mining megaproject called \u201cSanta Marta\u201d, promoted by the Canadian company Minaurum Gold Coper.<\/li>\n<li>That the Secretary of Economy of the Government of Mexico does not grant the four applications for mining concessions that are in process, that will cover approximately 107,383.63 hectares (although it would affect a bigger area) from where they intend to extract gold (Au), silver (Ag), copper (Cu) and lead (Pb).<\/li>\n<li>That the Mexican government and international organizations respect and recognize the inalienable rights of communal ownership of the territory (including the subsoil) by the Zoque indigenous people (<em>Angp\u00f8n<\/em>) who have inhabited and cared for the Chimalapas rainforest for thousands of years.<\/li>\n<li>That the Government of Mexico and international organizations articulate the necessary measures for the recognition of the ecological and biocultural values of this territory, and for its effective protection, thus assuring the life of the Zoque indigenous people of Chimalapas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In this way we express our support and international solidarity with the defense of the territory of the Zoque people, because to save the Chimalapas forest is to take another step in the defense of the planet, life and humanity.<\/p>\n<p>To sign-up this petition (before the 7<sup>th<\/sup> of september) fill in the following form <a href=\"https:\/\/forms.gle\/rB8DTBQMqH5onHx56\">https:\/\/forms.gle\/rB8DTBQMqH5onHx56<\/a> or send an email to <a href=\"mailto:selvachimalapas@gmail.com\">selvachimalapas@gmail.com<\/a> according to the following: academics and researchers (name, country, institution, research groups), professionals (name, country, profession, institution\/company),\u00a0 environmentalist and defenders of the territory (name, country and organization or indigenous people).
