El \u00fanico delito que cometieron los ejidatarios de San Sebasti\u00e1n Bachaj\u00f3n es querer vivir en sus tierras, las tierras de sus abuelos, de sus m\u00e1s remotos antepasados, que ahora quieren ser apropiadas por las multinacionales del dinero y la muerte. Los cinco ejidatarios presos desde el 3 de febrero, as\u00ed como Patricio Dom\u00ednguez V\u00e1zquez, detenido a mediados de abril en el ejido Monte Redondo del municipio de Frontera Comalapa, son v\u00edctimas de la clase pol\u00edtica que trabaja para las multinacionales.<\/p>\n
La guerra hoy es por la tierra, por apropiarse de la vida que ella alberga y reproduce, y para eso los ind\u00edgenas y campesinos son meros estorbos de los cuales es necesario deshacerse. Desde que el capital decidi\u00f3 que todo es mercanc\u00eda para hacer negocios y acumular m\u00e1s capital, no queda ya espacio ni rinc\u00f3n del planeta que pueda librarse de esa ambici\u00f3n. Para apropiarse de la tierra, desataron lo que los zapatistas denominan como cuarta guerra mundial<\/strong> que en Am\u00e9rica latina pasa por la expulsi\u00f3n de millones de personas de m\u00e1s de alrededor de cien millones de hect\u00e1reas en disputa. Los grandes proyectos de miner\u00eda a cielo abierto, de monocultivos de ca\u00f1a de az\u00facar, ma\u00edz y soya para producir gasolina, y las plantaciones de \u00e1rboles para fabricar celulosa, est\u00e1n matando la vida y la gente de sur a norte.<\/p>\n En algunos casos, como le sucedi\u00f3 a Patricio, no s\u00f3lo es encarcelado sino le quemaron y destruyeron su casa porque en realidad buscan que abandone su tierra. Esa es la guerra que ya lleva sesenta a\u00f1os en Colombia, que permiti\u00f3 que m\u00e1s de cuatro millones de hect\u00e1reas pasaran de los campesinos a manos de los paramilitares ya que ellos se ofrecen como seguridad de las multinacionales. Una guerra para expulsar campesinos, m\u00e1s de tres millones en los \u00faltimos veinte a\u00f1os, para despejar territorios que se convierten en espacios para la especulaci\u00f3n del capital. En Colombia, los territorios de la guerra coinciden exactamente con los territorios que ambicionan las grandes mineras y los megaproyectos de infraestructura.<\/p>\n Lo mismo est\u00e1 sucediendo en todo el continente. El gobierno de Brasil est\u00e1 convirtiendo los r\u00edos amaz\u00f3nicos en fuentes de energ\u00eda barata para las grandes empresas brasile\u00f1as y del Norte. Para eso construye gigantescas represas en cuya construcci\u00f3n trabajan diez, quince y hasta veinte mil obreros mal pagados y peor alojados, nuevos esclavos al servicio de gobiernos sumisos al capital. Cuando se rebelan, como sucedi\u00f3 en Jirau (estado de Roraima) en el mes de marzo, son acusados de \u201cbandidos\u201d.<\/p>\n Lo que m\u00e1s duele, y lo que m\u00e1s ense\u00f1a, es c\u00f3mo la clase pol\u00edtica que alguna vez dijo ser de izquierda se une con la clase pol\u00edtica que siempre fue de derechas para expulsar y encarcelar campesinos e ind\u00edgenas, mostrando que son todos iguales cuando se trata de atacar a los de abajo para hacer negocios para los de arriba. Y usan argumentos \u201cecol\u00f3gicos\u201d porque aprendieron las excusas pol\u00edticamente correctas para disimular el despojo.<\/p>\n Desde este rinc\u00f3n del continente, me uno a ustedes que desde Nueva York realizan la campa\u00f1a por la libertad de los cinco de Bachaj\u00f3n y por Patricio. El Movimiento por Justicia del Barrio, al que pude conocer en enero de 2009 durante el festival de la Digna Rabia en San Crist\u00f3bal de las Casas, muestra que la solidaridad y la fraternidad entre los pueblos no conoce fronteras, ni puede esperar nada de los arriba ni de las instituciones, y que s\u00f3lo dependemos de nosotros mismos.<\/p>\n Salud,<\/p>\n Ra\u00fal ZibechiMontevideo, May 2, 2011.<\/p>\n Dear compas from Movement for Justice in El Barrio and The Other Campaign New York:<\/p>\n The only crime the people of the San Sebasti\u00e1n Bachaj\u00f3n ejido have committed is that of wanting to live in their lands\u2014the lands of their grandparents, of their most distant ancestors\u2014which now risk being appropriated by the multinationals of money and death. The five from Bachaj\u00f3n, imprisoned since February 3, like Patricio Dom\u00ednguez V\u00e1zquez, who was detained in mid-April in the ejido Monte Redondo of Frontera Comalapa, are victims of the political class that works in the service of multinational corporations.<\/p>\n Today\u2019s war is for the land: To appropriate the life that it provides for and reproduces, and for this reason, the indigenous peoples and campesinos are the primary obstacles that must be done away with. Ever since capital decided that everything is a commodity for doing business and accumulating more capital, no space on earth remains \u2013 not even the slightest corner \u2013 that can free itself from this ambition. In order to seize the land, they unleashed what the Zapatistas have termed the \u201cFourth World War.\u201d In Latin American this war lies in the displacement of millions of people from roughly one hundred million hectares in dispute. The huge open-pit mining projects; the monocropping of sugarcane, maize, and soy to produce gasoline; and the planting of trees to create cellulose are all killing life and people from South to North.<\/p>\n In some cases, such as Patricio\u2019s, where not only was he imprisoned, but his house was burned down and destroyed because, in reality, they wanted him to abandon his land. That is the war that has existed for 60 years in Colombia, which allowed more than four million hectares to pass from the hands of the farmers to those of the paramilitaries, since they are offered as a form of security by the multinationals. A war to expel farmers \u2013 over three million in the last twenty years \u2013 in order to free up territories so that they may be converted into spaces for the speculation of capital. In Colombia, the territories of the war coincide precisely with the territories that the big mines and infrastructure megaprojects desire.<\/p>\n The same thing is taking place throughout the entire continent. The Brazilian government is turning the Amazonian rivers into cheap energy sources for the big businesses from Brazil and the North. It is constructing enormous dams that require ten, fifteen, and even twenty thousand poorly paid and miserably housed workers: They are the new slaves for governments obedient to capital. When they rise up, as they did in Jirau (in the state of Roraima) last March, they become labeled as \u201cbandits.\u201d<\/p>\n What is most painful, and most revealing, is how the political class that once claimed to be of the Left unites with the perennial political class of the Right in the displacement and imprisonment of indigenous peoples and farmers, and in doing so, demonstrates that they are all the same in their attack against those from below to make businesses for those from above. And they use \u201cecological\u201d arguments because they learned the politically correct excuses to downplay displacement.<\/p>\n From this corner of the continent, I join you who all in New York who are carrying out the campaign to free the Bachaj\u00f3n 5 and Patricio. Movement for Justice in El Barrio, who I was able to meet in January 2009 at the Festival of Dignified Rage in San Cristobal de las Casas, shows that community solidarity and camaraderie know no borders, and that we cannot hope for anything from those from above or their institutions.
